One of best, Sam Peckinpah was legendary and his slow mo action scenes were way ahead of his time
The set piece action scenes in that movie considering it was made in the 70s was superb
If only he was around to day with a Speilburg budget to do that movie

well peter jackson could do it

Platoon is the god father of all War movies as its the most truthfull and least gloryfied.
Other greats:
Hamburger Hill (Class!!!!)
Saving private fat head (Matt Damon)
Enemy at the gate
Zulu
Casulties of War (Quite disturbing drama based on real fact)

If peter jackson does a war movie you can gurantee that it'll be at least as long as the war itself.   :D

Seriously though it's got to be Saving Private Ryan for me -  the sheer realism of that opening sequence could only have been done by spielerg and the stories that came out around the time of the films release about actual D-Day veterans saying it was like reliving that horrendous day again only proved how accurate the depiction was for me.

Another war movie that hasn't been mentioned here yet is Downfall. Admittedly i still haven't seen it the whole way through (ITS ABOUT 3 FOOKIN HOURS LONG  :) ) but what i have seen so far has totally drawn me into it and only the fact that I've needed to get to bed or go out has stopped me watching it all of the way through has stopped me.
The performance of Bruno Ganz as Hitler is breathtaking as he almost manages to make this monstrous person seem normal and in doing so it makes what he actually did so much worse. If you ain't seen it yet do so and I plan to at the first oppurtunity i get.

I loved the bizarre nature of Catch 22, I loved the book as well though.

Apocolypse Now had a dark edge to it that I liked too.

Full Metal Jacket was awesome as well.  And although not a film, I really liked the Vietnam TV series 'tour of duty' which used paint it black by the rolling stones to play out the credits at the end

Dino de Laurentiis' 1970 production Waterloo was the most ambitious film ever made of the campaign. With a handful of stars and a supporting cast of thousands (literally), it was said that, during its making, director Sergei Bondarchuk was in command of the seventh largest army in the world. The military extras were all supplied by the Soviet army, and the film was largely shot in the then Soviet Union.

Another outstanding war film , the cavalry sequences filmed from above as Ney unleashes the french cavalry onto the British infantry squares are breathtaking , literally thousands of horses and troops all engaged in total mayhem and all without the aid of CGI.

Spotted this review , sounds like one for Wooly . :D

Whores From China Night, or Not Everyone Can Be Ang Lee

Asian cinema has enjoyed a renaissance in popularity in recent years, but Asian filmakers still seem keener than most on churning out offensive, cheaply produced, sexist trash, so I was spoiled for choice. Still, at least you know what you're getting with a movie called Whores From China. Nobody is going to take it home, put it in the VCR and say, "Heeyyyy, wait a minute! This film has whores in it. From China." Neither is there a need to pepper it with stickers bearing the words "Warning: may contain whores (Chinese)"

For what it's worth, the movie is about whores. From China.

But you probably guessed that.
