Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

"Many of the players who comment on Liverpool are legends and they deserve to be listened to," said the Liverpool boss. "You can't always be thinking about their reaction, because you can't change things. But it is better to hear things from them and maybe to learn things from them too.

"I like to talk with them. Sometimes my English is not the best but I like to speak to them. After the Crystal Palace game, for instance, I spoke to John Aldridge and we talked about the game and the future.

"Players like him, or Ian Rush, they have experience of this club, of the Premiership, or playing in other countries. Ian can talk about the differences when he was playing for Juventus and John can talk about Real Sociedad. This helps you learn about how different things can be in other countries.

"People like that are really positive and they try to support me. If it was someone else they would try to do the same for him because they are legends and want the best for the club.

"They like Liverpool, but sometimes they say things because they think they need to be said and I am fine with that."

Glad to see Rafa is keen to learn and listen. It will help him improve as a coach and fans and people like Aldo in general have a rather large collective opinion which is along the same lines.

Read this on RAWK today actually with varying comments afterwards, some commending Rafa for building bridges broken by Houllier with the former players who now comment in the media, others saying that it's unfair to say that; as Houllier had Thompson, Lee and Rush on his staff towards the end of his reign so it wasn't all one way with him and he therefore must have consulted and taken advice from 'legends', as he had three of them on his staff.

Depends which way you want to spin the story I suppose.  As far as I'm concerned if Rafa wants to consult these guys and keep them onside, I'm content with that.  Nobody should really think that he is being told what to do.  He says it himself, he thinks he can learn from the ex-players who played abroad themselves.

Don't get me wrong, i'm not having a pop at Houllier, those who know me know thats not my style at all.

What i'm getting at is that Rafa is open to critisism and takes it onboard. At times its right to turn round and say "who are you to argue with me". In europe, who is? But in the premier league he's totally admitted he doesn't know it all.

I always backed Houllier for his belief in what he was doing was correct. To a certain extent it was, the man gave me great memories, great times and tried his very best. In the end it wasn't quite enough, Rafa now is a different sort of manager, but one i have equal respect for and one who has given me something i've never experienced before, the one that matters most is all i have left to see. Again, as with Houllier i believe, i just hope this time he doesn't fall short. If he does however, again, he's already won my heart for the next 5 years.
