In France the handshake can be a very subtle form of insult. Believe me it's true, hubby got it from a French work colleague and from friends of ours who have a place in France. At social occasions, the French will shake hands with everyone they meet in the room, whether they know them or not, young or old, I have been on the receiving end of this, a charming old fashioned custom of shaking hands and saying Bonjour. The insult comes in when
1)as a French person, you do not shake hands at all (downright obvious insult) or
2) you shake their hands twice on the same social event.
Event no.1) you are being very rude deliberately and don't care if everyone sees it.
Event no. 2) you are being subtly rude because shaking someones hand twice is equivalent to saying that their presence was not important enough for you to remember shaking their hand the first time, ie you hold them in contempt.
Therefore if Cisse signed an autograph, and someone went to shake his hand, then pulled back their hand to make the usual childish gesture much beloved of my friends 9 yr old son, then Cisse may find it extremely insulting and react badly. I am not condoning his actions, but he is only a young man, and I gather the recipient of the smack was not a 9 yr old boy, so my argument in Cisses defense is a lack of cultural understanding on both sides? Amazingly Cisse is only 23, 24? tho he looks older.
Just a thought.
