Leverkusen .....

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

... have revealed that we made an enquiry Dimitar Berbatov in the summer. Wouldn't had been a bad buy imo, and he would had been cheap.

Full story:

Sky Sports

Bayer Leverkusen have revealed that Liverpool made a summer enquiry for Dimitar Berbatov.

The European champions spent much of pre-season scouring for a new striker before eventually settling on England new boy Peter Crouch.

Reds boss Rafa Benitez sifted through a lengthy list of possible targets before signing Crouch from Southampton, and Berbatov's name was under consideration.

The Bulgaria international is a regular scorer for the Bundesliga side and Leverkusen's director of sport Rudi Voller confirmed the interest from Anfield.

“There was an enquiry from Liverpool over the summer, although we haven’t heard from them ever since," Voller told Kicker.

Reports in the German media now suggest that Liverpool have been joined by rivals Arsenal in the bid to lure Berbatov to England.

Though the hit-man is tied to the BayArena until 2009, it is widely believed that, after failing to generate income from their Uefa Cup campaign following their embarrassing first round exit against CSKA Sofia, Leverkusen are not prepared to turn down a serious offer in the region of €12 million (£8.2 million) for the talented 24-year-old.

Club owners and main sponsors Bayer plc. have recently told the club that they will have to reduce their budget over the next few years and selling the lanky forward might therefore prove the easiest opportunity to balance the books.

German giants Bayern Munich and Schalke are also believed to be keen on Berbatov’s services but Leverkusen would prefer to sell to a foreign club rather than strengthening a Bundesliga competitor.

He's been scoring consistantly for Leverkusen for some time now. He's scored 5 goals for Leverkusen already this season. I think he played against us in the CL, can't remember as I recall him being injured at one point of time.

as i remember he wasnt on the game sheet. If we signed him would he be able to fit into the rough and tough of the english game, aswell as fit with the club?

I don't see why wouldn't he be able to fit into the Rafa's system but whether he'll adapt to the English game is a typical question for almost every foreign player.

Yes, he did play against us. He didn't play to bad either from what i remember considering we dominated them. He played well played well during the champs league and I remember him scoring a fantastic goal against real madrid last season when they beat them 3-0. Would have been a great buy imo and better than all of the strikers we currently have.

a nice little write up about him on the uefa champ league website, only discretion would be he struggled for his first year to adapt to the Bundesliga. Definately sounds like a goal scorer. He was named Bulgarian Footballer of the Year in 2002.

I agree.

He did play against us last season...he missed a one on one...totally scuffed his shot.
He is definately strong enough for the Premiership but nowhere near good enough imo.

I doubt that we're going to move in for Berbatov, we made an enquiry and haven't done anything else. Which was before we signed Crouch and it seems that Arsenal are interested in him. Leverkusen are mentioning us in order to get Arsenal to bid higher for him.

Yeah from what i've seen of Berbatov (which isn't much) I dont think he'll be a great improvement on what we've already got, I can't really see us making a move for him in January. If a move for a striker is on the cards then my money would be on this  Kuyt  from PSV.Image
