Calliste stars in wales romp

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

A Ramon Calliste-inspired Wales Under-21 side cruised to a 3-0 win over Azerbaijan in their final Uefa Championship qualifier at Newport.

Boss Brian Flynn has used over 40 players in the past year of this tournament searching for the next generation of Welsh senior internationals, and this victory at least gave him plenty to be confident about for the future.

The star was Liverpool striker Calliste who could have had a hat-trick, set up a couple of goals and gave the Azeri a torrid night with his fine control and movement.

But Wales got their reward with second half goals from Mark Pritchard, Mark Birchall and defender Peter Gilbert, four minutes from the end of his 12th and final game at this level.

But only four of this side are too old for next year's European competition, and Flynn can at last see the benefits of throwing so many youngsters into a group that has seen them take some heavy beatings.

Not this time though, with Wales producing their biggest winning margin at this level since they beat San Marino 4-0 in 1996.

If their under 21's beat them 3-0 then England senior squad would probably have won 1-0 with a fluke pen or sumthin  :no

We also turned down John O'Shea who is a good player, so don't read too much into Man U releasing him.
