Guess who I met today?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby jonnymac1979 » Fri Apr 02, 2004 10:11 pm

In and around my daily business today, a friend of mine, Peter was escorting a group of VIP's to the race meeting at Aintree today and I found myself standing but six feet away from them;  "Sir" Roger Hunt, Gordon Banks, Ian Callaghan, and Brian Labone.

Well, I couldn't have forgiven myself if I let the opportunity to meet them pass, so I managed to catch my friend Peter's attention, and asked him politely if he could introduce me to Roger Hunt as he was the closest to me at that moment and the others were talking amongst themselves.

Peter obliged and before I knew it, I was shaking the great mans hand.  I have to say here and now that Roger Hunt was WAY before my time, i'm only twenty-four years old, but this man has won the World Cup, he's a legend and i've seen that goal he scored against Inter Milan over and over so many times I can quote the Wolstenholme commentary.  He demands respect.

Hunt.....a goal.....a great goal, a great goal by Hunt!!

It must have showed that I was nervous and it felt right and courteous to say to him " It's an absolute pleasure to meet you"

Then immediately, whilst still shaking Sir Roger's hand, Peter was introducing me to Gordon Banks, who wanted to know who his mate Roger was talking to, again the pleasure was all mine.  This was only the legend who is famous throughout the world for being not just the greatest goalkeeper of his generation, but possibly in documented football history.

"Cally" was just making a joke about a goal that had literally been shown on television that second (FYI David Beckham's 25 yarder against Arsenal in the 1999 FA Cup Semi Final) saying that "Banksy would have tipped that over the bar!!!".  Brian Labone then introduced himself, finally to be greeted by Ian Callaghan.

The whole conversation only lasted a minute or two, I asked them if they were enjoying themselves, they joked about the champagne breakfast they had already eaten, the fact that Brian Labone had drank a full bottle and was set up for the day!!!

After wishing them well I went back to my business.  I was slightly over-awed and shell shocked, they had been standing there listening to me about how MY day was going and i'm busy spluttering out that it was fine!!

About five minutes later, I tried to ring my girlfriend and Dad to tell them, but couldn't get through to either.  Just as well, because just as I would have been shouting about how I had just met these legends, they walked right past me again.

All together in unison they said "Hello again, John", I said back "Have a good day, gents" and there was time for one last handshake from Brian Labone.

I thought about who I had just met in context to how I think of them.  These old men had done it all in the game, they deserve respect, these are the men who have won World Cups, European Cups, foiled Pele, Eusebio, Beckenbauer etc... played with Bobby Moore, and although unfamiliar with Brian Labone, I understand he was an excellent centre half for Everton.

Not really the kind of people you meet every day folks and I have to say that it's a couple of minutes in my life I am unlikely to forget in a hurry.

Jonnymac, sounds like a great day mate! Wonder what those old fellas make of what's going on at their country's greatest ever side?  :(

I didn't ask them mate.

It was something I thought about afterwards, but it was all over in a flash.  They must have opinions though.  It just wasn't the time or place to ask.

Still, not every day you meet 3 legends at once! If I was in your shoes I think I'd have just dribbled and talked nonsense. Much like our f##king manager.

You had to be there mate.

Shame I couldn't have had a drink with them.  Maybe i'll see them again for that.

My girlfriend has "hinted" she is purchasing a tour around Anfield and the Trophy Room soon for us both (even though she does not support Liverpool).  For someone who has been brought up in Liverpool all his life it's something i've never experienced.

My Dad and my two brothers went on the tour when there was the UEFA Cup, FA Cup and the Worthington Cup all shiny, silver and new in the cabinet.  I never went.  Still, don't look back in anger.

You met Hunt and Gordon Banks, so what!

I once met Phil Babb, you know the guy who slid into the post against Chelsea right as Chelsea scored, I have never seen a whole pub cheer (Manu fans everywhere) and groan at the same time.

Glad you met some real legends Jonny.
I watched Roger as a young lad on the KOP and saw him bang in those famous 41 goals in 41 games during the season that Liverpool finally got promoted from the old second division into the first.
We never looked back after that under the guidance of the great Shanks.
Roger Hunt was a brilliant finisher and if he had been playing for one of the fashionable London clubs he would have been a million times more famous.
As it was, the 'London Press' never forgave Roger for turfing the local hero, Jimmy Greaves out of the England team.
But he became more successful than Greaves ever did as Liverpool marched on - and into glory for the next 30 years.
I went to the same school as Cally(he is a bit older than me!) and he was a legend in my old stomping ground even before he stopped playing.
He is also a lovely and very modest man.
I was at Wembley when Cally crossed for the Saint to score and give Liverpool our first FA cup win. I've met Cally a few times since and found him to be great company.
Unfortunately I never met Roger, and I wish I had done - just to tell him what a great player he was and how much the fans loved him.
So I'm a bit jealous now, Jonny but I'm glad you met a couple of the guys who gave me so much to shout about all those years ago.
Nice post!

And about 15 pints presumably if Curly had anything to do with it...

I was introduced to Bryan Robson at a charity night a while back and was proud as hell to tell him how much of a Liverpool fan I am; I then proceeded to give £10 to charity in return for the singer giving us a rendition of You'll Never Walk Alone. Surprisingly Robson took it in good humour     :)  :)

Nice post Jonnymac - those are real legends,

I met a few celebs during Euro 96 where i was working as a steward at Wembley. Fantastic.
Met Lineker and Ian Wright coming out of one of the boxes when we were all in the long bar waiting for our pay. Also my mate showed Zoe Ball to her seat for one match.
Also met the biggest ****** footballer ever - Ian Walker when he was playing for spurs. He tried to blag his way into the Frank Bruno v Olicer Mcall heavyweight title fight and when i would not let him in he asked me if i knew who he was.
I told him he was the bloke who played the scarecrow in the Wizard of Oz!
