If they want peace, why invite some one like this their Feile? Surely there was other people they could have invited?

Sinn Fein and the IRA always showed solidarity with the Palestinians and Sinn Fein makes no bones about its views on the Israel Palestine conflict.

However, I'm not sure this is the smartest thing to do. Surely Sinn Fein can selfishly dump its support for the Palestinians (or at least water down the talking to bombers approach) now that it claims to be pursuing a purely political and peaceful agenda?

Yeah !! Mr Adams has accociated with murdering scum all his life!More than a few murders in Sinn Fein id say!!
I suppose we cant expect the leopard to change its spots just because his IRA buddies claim to be on a peaceful agenda!

We all know that Gerry Adam's and Co have their fingers in many pies..........
Showing sympathey with Palestine is just one of those pies!

Now there will be an amnesty for IRA suspect's, some who have been on the run for many years! What a joke!! I know that a lot of people have been let out, but that is in accordance with the Good Friday Agreement! But to let these people, who have not served any sentence at all, back into to the country is a laugh! They will be walking the street's, just like you and me, doing their everyday buisness......

The IRA want to become a legal organisation!!! Doing what exactly?

Maybe some one can give the goverment any idea's, because I don't have any!!!!

Watch tower's that have been keeping an eye on thing's, are being taken down! Army post's in south Armagh are being taken down as we speak. One tower in Londonderry and one in Belfast will start being dismantled in the next couple of day's. That is only the start.....

I also heard a story today that the Royal Irish Ranger's are paying off soilder's because there is no need for them.

Tell me? Who's having the laugh now?

sounds like Ian Paisley is on our forum. We can argue all day and night about wether to trust who what or whatever..but lets be positive.

I think its great news. Lets not forget that the IRA were practically dead in 1969 but the unionists up north terrorised the catholics and descriminated against them too. The british backed all that too, democracy was organised so the catholics would get as few politicians elected as possible. The army came in and shot many innocent catholics dead too (terrorism!)

Also, the protestant fighters are still killing people, although mainly their own in drug wars.

I've never supported them but like all war in the world there are two sides - thatcher could never figure out why they weren't just criminals and thats why she never made any progress.

I also think there are many lessons from the war in NI that can be applied to today, these include the fact that internment helps recruit your enemy and that you cannot militarily defeat guerilla soldiers. You have to either live with the violence or try remove the problem.

I know some people will misinterpret this mail but what the fukk.

I agree with the sentiments of that Niall.

I detest the IRA but painting them as the sole bad guys is not correct nor fair.

The Loyalist gangs killed and maimed as well, and they spread their terrorism to the Republic with the bombing attrocities of Monaghan and Dublin in the 1970s. I have no doubt that the British armed forces colluded in these attacks and hopefully the current enquiry into the atrocity will bear this out.

It is well documented that British intelligence agencies and the army colluded with Loyalist terrorists during various stages of the Troubles.

Again, these comments are not in support of the IRA or Sinn Fein - I detest both - but it is wrong to suggest that the IRA are the only ones to blame. Loyalist gangs, the British army and intelligence agencies and also various British governments are also to blame for the tragedy that was Northern Ireland.

There is a certain element of hypocricy among some elements of the British establishment against the current war on Islamic terrorism given that there was collusion with Loyalist Terrorists and rogue elements assisted the Monaghan and Dublin attrocities.

There should be no triumphalism after the IRA's statement, people should try to put the past behind them and work for a positive future, which is a peaceful and democratic northern Ireland.

Forgive my pessimism, but I have to say that only time will tell if the IRA's recent statement holds ANY significance at all. So many times have we in Northern Ireland been let down by both the paramilitary groups and our politicians that I refuse to get my hopes up any more. Many of us thought that the good friday agreement would be the end of it, but still there were obstacles to be found.

It is my view that as long as Catholics and Protestants are segregated at school age and as long as exclusively Catholic and exclusively Protestant areas exist then there will ALWAYS be sectarian problems in N Ireland. The root of our problems still stems from this and will continue to for the foreseeable future.

As I dont live in N.Ireland,but having visited it on many occasions Iwould like the answers to a few questions.

1. Are things any different now than before the IRAs announcement.

2. Are the security forces going to persue terrorists for their attrocities.

3.Have the British government promised to release more murderers from jail.

4.When are we going to see evidence of the destruction of arms.

5.Are the IRA now going to disband,or are Sinn Feinn going to use it as a big stick kept in the background to use when they dont get what they want.

I can understand some peoples joy at the IRA statement,after all I dont live in N.Ireland,but personally I still have to be convinced of their intent.

After all we're on here to talk football!The political situation in N Ireland could have Thousands of sites of its own and still people would'nt get anywhere or agree! :no

People rightfully talk about the IRA earning the trust of the protestant community but don't forget the protestants have to earn the trust of the catholic community too after all those years of oppression.

Why wasn't the hatton report (which dealt with protestant bigotary in the police) implemented.

Surely, the IRA destroying all weapons and becoming legal (nearly all parties in south ireland descended from sinn fein and what people could call "terrorist" backround )

Have to agree with you here, I have my own fairly strong opinions on some of these issues but here's not the place.

Think I'll try and stick to the football debate from here on
