Sinn Fein's manifesto is dated. But they are doing well in local election's.
I hope I speak for everyone in NI. We are glad that this has happened and would love to see the UDA, UFF etc follow their example, but we have seen and heard it many times and we wait and hope it is true!

I agree Kazza i would love to see the day all paramilitaries are non existant! Lifes too f-ckin short

I think it is the end (although a few former IRA members will continue as local "Godfathers" in their communities) as Sinn Fein has been trying to ditch the IRA for years now, but that was easier said than done. Whether or not Adams and McGuinness are/were IRA Army Council members, it took them 20 years to persuade the IRA to stop, as it was clear that neither the policy of armed insurrection nor the ballot box and the bomb were wroking. Sinn Fein are on the rise and they know that the IRA were getting in their way of electoral success. The scary thing is that Sinn Fein (at least in its present format) are completely looney and follow a manifesto that is more 1930s than the 2000s.

JBG  Sinn Fein are the IRA !  The ballot box works for now if it fails and they aint getting there way! It'll be back to the bullet and the same men who are in politics now will be pulling the strings if they go back to there other tactic! Its one big organisation slowly but surely grinding down a spineless government!Come back Maggie Thatcher all is forgiven, she had more b-lls than Blair will ever have!Sinn Fein have never wanted 2 ditch the  IRA all they have been doing is try to look as if they want to! This appeals to the worldwide ignorant audience, hence a pat on the back for Gerry and an influx of millons of dollars from american sympathisers!! So now it looks good to dump arms and embrace peace!Meanwhile the money keeps coming to feed the machine!A stockpile of cash to sinn fein/IRA is as deadly as a stockpile of AK47 s or semtex!! Mark my words these men are not to be trusted!!

BarryBelfast, calm down!!

We know that this will happen! It all boils down to what Sinn Fein want.... "The United Ireland".

JBG was only saying that they are on the rise. Most Prodestant's in NI don't vote. Sinn Fein make sure that they get their's! They pick up old and disabled people in mini buses to take them to the polling stations! I don't think the DUP, PUP etc care if we vote or not! Then they wonder way they loose their seats!!!

No, I don't think that is as true as it was maybe 20 years ago, although I definitely think Martin McGuinness was/is on both.

Gerry Adams told the IRA in 1983 that they could never win the war through violence although it took them another 11 years to wind down the major campaign and in the 11 years since then, they've been going around trying to run their communities their way, with kneecapping justice dealt out where they saw fit.

I think what happened to Robert McCarthy is the beginning of the end of that as both the IRA and Sinn Fein lost a lot of support from Nationalist Communities after that.

I think that Sinn Fein have known for 20 years that the armed conflict was futile but convincing the diehards in the IRA took a long time.

Sinn Fein are on the rise, particularly in the Irish Republic were they are getting a lot of support in poor urban areas, and the IRA's recent statement is all part of a long term plan where Sinn Fein hopes to get into a coalition government in the South within 10 years and hope to split the Unionist vote in the Northern Assembly.

I don't trust Sinn Fein and even if they had absolutely nothing to do with violence I wouldn't vote for them as they have crazy Marxist agendas.

As for American support, I think you are a bit behind the times Belfastred as there has been a major change in attitudes in the US towards the IRA after September 11th. Before a lot of Irish Americans were very ignorant of the situation and equated the IRA with 1916 freedom fighter, not criminal thugs who perverted the IRA into some sort of private criminal militia. However, I think the penny has now dropped and it was reported last year that Sinn Fein's donations from the US were the lowest in modern times. On top of that, the 3 IRA men who were caught in Columbia really p.issed the US government off.

Eg Martin (Art Garfunkel) Maginnes new about and sanctioned the Nortern bank raid!!This is widely known and Gerry was livid! I just dont trust them and never will, seen too many bad things in my time!just for the record im not of any religion ie im not a prod or a taig as the say in Belfast!Either way hope our wee country sees a lasting peace! The people deserve it if nothing else! :)

The Northern Bank raid was probably the big pay off for the boys. :D  I'm sure McGuinness knew about it and it was a way of keeping the volunteers happy as Sinn Fein and the IRA knew that they were going to call it a day this year.

A lot of the big boys in Sinn Fein had IRA pasts: Gerry Kelly, one of their big kahunas, served time in prison for murder.

In the South there is a new breed of Sinners rising, those like Mary Lou McDonald, who have not been tainted by the IRA and violence, and Sinn Fein is building its future on this new generation. They are still completely barmy, however, guns or no guns, and I'd keep well away.

Its not just Sinn Fein though, most of the policitians in the North got their hands dirty at one point or another. Ian Paisley had Loyalist gun men stationed outside his house at the height of the troubles.

Here Here!!!!! I have lived with it all my life (I'm 35) and theres nothing more I would love to see, but I don't trust Sinn Fein/IRA.
All we can do is keep our fingers crossed!!!

It is nice to see that Irish American's have opened their eyes to what is happening here. But it did take 7/11 for them to realise what their money was being spent on!
Lets hope that Loyalist follow...................

Whilst a load of ex-IRA terrorists and murderers sip coktails on the beach in rio, suddenly immune from the uk legal system and enjoying the proceeds of the northern bank raid (£20-odd million if I remember rightly?) please spare a thought for poor Tony Blair who has to sit up all night with his spin doctors working out how much political capital he can personally cash-in on by releasing murderers half way through their sentence

And politicians wonder why we don't trust them  ???

I hope that this time the IRA are for real, and they also keep all their dissident splinter-groups in check. I also hope the thugs who claim to be UDA/UVF can stop hiding behind a smokescreen of religion and just quit the violence

The Northern Bank Raid!!! What a waste of time!  The Northern Bank withdraw from circulation all the old notes, and release new ones!  What are the IRA going to do with all that waste paper? Hand it over to Belfast City Council for recycling!

But what does all this "end of the war" :censored: really mean.  One mans terrorist, is another mans freedom fighter, come drug dealing, racketeering, cross border smuggling, mafiosa, scum.  As Gerry Adams rightly said "They haven't gone away, you know"  And they never will, there's too much profit to be made.

How many behind the scenes concessions were made to get us this far?  Countless.  What next, the new Chief Constable will be Pat Doherty, or Sean Kelly!  Well we have had a confessed IRA man, the commander of the Derry Brigade, Director of Operations, Northern Command PIRA and Chief of Staff PIRA, one Mr Martin McGuinness as Minister for Education in the Northern Ireland Assembly!!!!!!!  So, having an ex-IRA (or current IRA) member as Chief Constable isn't that unrealistic!!!!!!!!

All rite minded decent people want the same!!As u say though i will embelish if u dont mind,Maggie would have made them serve all the sentence and then talked!! In our climate of political suicide and human rites bein more important than the crime itself wot do u expect??i for one have no faith in our justice system or emigration!just spent 36 yrs gettin rid of IRA terrorists! Now a whole new kettle of fish has risen and still the government pussyfoot about afraid of hurting or offending a certain sect of our warped society!
i say root them out by the fu-in neck and if we tread on  a few toes on the way, tough sh-t!!
To make Britain a better country Britain needs to put Britain first!Lets not worry about them cos they dont worry bout us! Britain is British ,if u dont like it u can fu-k off!
