Ira - Ceasefire

This story has almost got lost under the weight of news about Al Qaeda and suicide bombers, but the IRA has today announced that their campaign of violence and terrorism has stopped for good, and that they will pursue their aims purely through diplomatic and political means

Whilst I will believe it when I see it, it is certainly good news for NI and also Britain and the Republic. Their 30 years of murder can never be forgiven or forgotten but this could well be the end of much of the troubles I hope

We must not forget that this has all happened before. If I'm not mistaken, more than a decade ago, the "official" IRA gave up the armed struggle, having got what concessions it could out of the government. It was not long before the Provisional IRA, with many of the same members, carried on from where they left off. We can only hope this is not another false dawn, and that the "real" or "continuity" IRAs do not simply step into the breach.

Correct mate 11 years ago they declared a ceasefire!Meanwhile on the streets of Belfast they continue to kill, take the law into theyre own hands, control areas, intimmedate the list goes on!
All we heard today was the same :censored: we heard 11 years ago, time will tell if they mean it this time!

Can we realistically trust these barbaric toss-pots? I very much doubt it. They'll ceasefire until bender Blair churps up with his tuppence, then they'll be firing like a Bank boss in the Wall Street Crash.

Lets not get carried away here,a statement was read out at 4pm today saying basically the war is over! The war was meant to be over 11 yrs ago!
And as for sayin 'Good on the IRA' ???? ???
After 30 odd years of evil, torture, abuse, murder and the rest!
Good on the IRA is the last thing on my mind!Nothing is forgiven or forgotten!
These animals are only stopping the armed campain now because they realise that Tony Blair is a spineless cu*t and can be manipulated by cute politics!!
As for drug dealers they'd be here regardless of any paramilitaries!Theyre in all societies everywhere now!

I think she means good on the ira for ending the violence :;):
All the kids now are running about off their heads and have no interest in signing up to paramilitarys lol but saying that-they do a fine job on dealers in my area.
Negotiating with terrorists was never on thatchers mind..

As many have said I'll believe it when I see it.

Hamas have said similar things on numerous occasions, and a few months later their is a suicide attack in Israel.

We'll see what happens and they'll have to bear out their words with actions but at the same time, if they do stick to their word, this is a genuine opportunity to move things forward.

The British Army have already started to disasemble some of their watch towers and hopefully the Assembly can get back up and running soon.

Sorry to correct you, but it's 36 years. But I agree with what you said. 1000's of men, women and children have been killed and maimed in this so called "war". They IRA say that they will give up their arm's..... They keep saying that! What the people in Northern Ireland want is to see proof that they have! Most people in NI are sick to the back teeth of all the talk! You you really think that they will give up everything? I for one don't think so. What about INLA and other nationalist organization's? Have they said that they will do the same? No, I think not! Untill there is proof of a total cessation of violance, I would'nt hold my breath........

And to add balance to the agruement, Kazza 1, the Loyalist groups must also lay down their arms.

I think it is the end (although a few former IRA members will continue as local "Godfathers" in their communities) as Sinn Fein has been trying to ditch the IRA for years now, but that was easier said than done. Whether or not Adams and McGuinness are/were IRA Army Council members, it took them 20 years to persuade the IRA to stop, as it was clear that neither the policy of armed insurrection nor the ballot box and the bomb were wroking. Sinn Fein are on the rise and they know that the IRA were getting in their way of electoral success. The scary thing is that Sinn Fein (at least in its present format) are completely looney and follow a manifesto that is more 1930s than the 2000s.

JBG  Sinn Fein are the IRA !  The ballot box works for now if it fails and they aint getting there way! It'll be back to the bullet and the same men who are in politics now will be pulling the strings if they go back to there other tactic! Its one big organisation slowly but surely grinding down a spineless government!Come back Maggie Thatcher all is forgiven, she had more b-lls than Blair will ever have!Sinn Fein have never wanted 2 ditch the  IRA all they have been doing is try to look as if they want to! This appeals to the worldwide ignorant audience, hence a pat on the back for Gerry and an influx of millons of dollars from american sympathisers!! So now it looks good to dump arms and embrace peace!Meanwhile the money keeps coming to feed the machine!A stockpile of cash to sinn fein/IRA is as deadly as a stockpile of AK47 s or semtex!! Mark my words these men are not to be trusted!!

I agree with you 100% Certain Loyalist group's are fighting with each other!!
Sinn Fein's manifesto is dated. But they are doing well in local election's.
I hope I speak for everyone in NI. We are glad that this has happened and would love to see the UDA, UFF etc follow their example, but we have seen and heard it many times and we wait and hope it is true!
