Why hasn't rafa filled in the gaps in the squad?

According to Rafa we are making 2 more signings, probably a central defender and a striker, and anything on top of that will be free transfers.  Zenden and Reina are good players but they aren't addressing the real holes in the squad, like centre back, left back, right midfield, a backup for Hamann, a replacement for Baros if/when he goes.  Crouch is not my idea of a replacement for Baros and moving Riise to left back doesn't work, he is a better midfielder than defender.  If the bulk of our transfer money goes on Reina and Crouch, it will be money wasted in my opinion.

A back up for Hamann   Well Gerrard and Alonso are available when didi isn't playing .  :nod

Traore has or is about to sign a four year deal , I think Rafa see's the LB position pretty much covered .

Didn't the European Cup Final prove that we need a Hamann type player for the holding role in midfield?  Neither Alonso or Gerrard were capable of doing that job, great going forward as they are.

A backup for Didi is Senegal's Salif Diao. You should not forget that he is still an LFC player.

and Rb is with Josemi, and Finnan.
And as for CM, if didi, alonso and Sg can't play, I'm sure Zenden can play there.

I was laughing because Gerrard and alonso are clearly our first choice partnership in midfield , you're suggesting we buy a back up for our back up.   :D

It's all about having options to play differently depending on the circumstances.  Obviously if we are playing a weak team at home we will want Alonso and Gerrard in the middle, but if we are away to a team like Arsenal, we would probably want a Hamann type player to be in there.  We can't do that if he's injured and we don't have a backup.

:D  Diao as backup for our backup.

Jokes apart, i hope that young John Welsh would be given the nod.
