:(  Its a really big shock isnt it.

Presenter Richard Whiteley dies

Richard Whiteley presented Countdown for over 20 years
Television presenter and journalist Richard Whiteley has died just days after undergoing heart surgery.
The host of Channel 4's daytime game show Countdown for 23 years, Whiteley died in Leeds General Infirmary.

The 61-year-old, from Ilkley, West Yorkshire, fell ill with pneumonia in May and was rushed to hospital. He had been said to be recovering slowly.

Whiteley, who had fronted the show with Carol Vorderman since 1982, is still on screen as the show is pre-recorded.

Real shock

Vorderman's agent, John Miles, said the pair were friends as well as colleagues, and she is devastated by the death.

  I'm shocked. It's terrible news

Terry Wogan

Obituary: Richard Whiteley

He said: "He'd had an operation, but this really is a shock. He'd seemed to be OK.

"Carol was told about his death by a member of his family."

Before presenting Countdown, Whiteley had been a familiar face on Yorkshire Television since the late 1960s.

Famous moments from his TV career included an on-screen attack by a ferret, and being broadcast in negative - with white hair and a black face.

Whiteley received an OBE last year

But he was also an incisive political reporter who was the first journalist to interview then prime minister, Margaret Thatcher, after the Brighton bombing in 1984.

Terry Wogan, fellow presenter and friend of Whiteley, said he was too upset to speak fully.

"I'm shocked. It's terrible new," the Radio 2 presenter said.

Last November Whiteley was honoured with an OBE from the Queen, who is said to be a Countdown fan, as was the late Queen Mother.

He leaves behind a partner of 11 years, Kathryn Apanowicz, who featured in Eastenders during the 1980s.

bloody hell, it's been one of those strange periods when a lot of people seem to have died, be it famous people like richard whiteley or the legend that was john peel, or for me at least a few people who were close to me

Average life expectancy for a male in the UK is around 75 , if however you were living in Zimbabwe you might have counted yourself amongst the lucky ones if you saw your 34th birthday !

Did Whitely ever take a holiday in Zimbabwe ? and if so did this reduce his lifespan ?

Do we REALLY care ?

I don't   :kungfu:

Bit harsh that woof  ??? I liked him on TV and I always think when people die out of the blue like this it is a shame, he was a well liked man.

Harsh ?
I never knew the guy , it means fk all to me .
Luv yer Cig ,but I'm not gone come on some footy site expressing my "sorrow" every time some face on the tv kicks the bucket .
Sure ,it's a sad day for his family and friends but I find the repeated condolences expessed in this forum every time some "face" pegs off shalllow and self indulgent .

How many people in here are going to attend the funeral ?
Bollox , like I said , this time next week (at most) how many will be thinking of Richard Whiteley ?

Have you got out of bed on Leon's side this morning Woof?   ???  No I didn't know Richard Whiteley and no I won't be going to his funeral but I've spent 2 thirds of my life seeing him on tv most weeks and thought he was a genuine, likeable and funny guy so I don't think it's an exercise in shedding crocodile tears or indulging in false sentimentality

Things like this also remind you of your own mortality and that of your friends and family, so it can have an effect on somebody even if they never knew the actual person

Whiteley's death was brought on by contracting pneumonia last month, just like when I came within a whisker of dying of pneumonia in hospital last year so it has just refreshed my memory of how fragile we all really are

So I say without embarrassment or regret, Rest In Peace Richard Whiteley

Are you shi'ttin me ?
You needed THIS to remind you of you own mortality ? .

Chriist , I only have to try and bend over to touch my toe's first thing in the morning to remind me that none of us live forever .

Do me a favour ,Wooly, for a pimp you're a pretty solid guy but don't go all fuc'kin' mushy on me .  Everbody Dies ,  sooner or later . As Dennis Leary said ...........

"I drive really slow in the ultra fast lane
While people behind me are going insane .............
Sometimes I park in handicapped spaces
While handicapped people
Make handicapped faces ............."

The "sincerity" of some of the posts I read in here make me cringe .
