i don't think baros will be next season anyway. he'll more than likely be sold, most probably to valencia, with a player thrown in in exchange.

I think Baros will be sold as Rafa usually only plays one striker. If we got £10m then we could get a quality centre back to partner JC (Hypia is getting on a bit).

Morientes, Cisse, Le Tellec, Pongolle will do up front if our formation is one up front and one behind.

If we qualify for CL and have that cash I'll be optimistic for next season (assuming injury crises doesn't happen)

i've been really impressed with the way Rafa gets the most out of what he has....after last nights performance, its hard to believe all the major injuries we've got!  Yet Rafa has taken 1/2 the sqaud (most of them were backup players) and made them play as good as anyteam in Europe!  With alonso back for the 2nd leg i'm confident of a 1-1 draw.

agree, he was playing poor, but you can live with that when a player can hit one from 25 yards and score against the worlds most expensive goalkeeper! :D

It looks like ALT has had a body(&Brain) transplant, I didn't recognise him at the start of the game.

I was very impressed with his attitude and has seemed to have gained the ability to leap like a salmon.

His range of passing and his work rate will complement Morientes much better than baros, I hope he gets a start against Man City.

Was it my imagination or was Baros trying to actually pass the ball occasionaly last night, most failed so I stick to my theory that the reason he never passes is because he can't!

I would also like to see the lad start at City this weekend. Looks like he's got his head down and worked hard since coming back from France with his tail between his legs. He's been scoring a few for the reserves and yesterdays' perormance gives Rafa more options. I still feel Le Tallec's best position is CM as his passing ability sets him out as more the goal provider than goal scorer. Time will tell.

As for Baros - total enigma to me. My opinion on him seems to change on an almost day to day basis. It's up at the moment. Anyone else suffer from Baros opinion changing disorder?. I thought he was fantastic during the first half last night playing against the wilyest centre-back pairing in world football. He dissapeared in the second half as we got deeper and Thuram seemed to find his bearings and stuck to him untill he was subbed for Smicer.

yeah. one minute i think he's not the answer to what we need and the next i'm convinced of it. :D

his work rate is not in question. he'll run the majority of defences ragged but he'll never score enough goals. :(

I know what you mean but i don't think i will be happy if we sell him. I could see myself agreeing with all the reasons for doing it but then feeling gutted.

We love ya Milan :D

Agree that 2nd striker is also a role he can play (and where Benitez sees him) and may turn out to be taylor made for him however, it is just about the most contested position in world football. Everyone wants to play in the 'hole' behind the striker(s). I just fancy he could become a cracking centre-mid one day.

stmichael wrote:The kid may well have acted like a little boy off the pitch for the best part of a year (resulting in him being loaned out) but having been at the game last night, I don't think you're likely to see too many players as mature as ALT appears to be at the age of 30, never mind 20. The guy was superb last night.

His vision is great and I think he'll definitely play more games this season if his attitude's right. He looks just the type of player Rafa likes having in his team. Intelligent, hard working, great vision. He seems to have decent pace too, so a partnership with Morientes for the next couple of games may work really well.

On a side note, does anyone else think that he's actually grown in height since last year? He looked a fair bit taller to me and was winning EVERYTHING in the air ...

One thing he needs is just fitness... He doesn't need to bulk up that much in my opinion, he just needs to be able to run 90 mins and he'll be fine ... His attitude must have improved, as evident by rafa's confidence in starting him in such an important game in this tournament ...

2 things became perfectly evident to me aswell last night:

1) Rafa's way of rewarding hard work - players work hard for this guy (pongolle, biscan, le tallec, traore, potter, etc)

2) The standing ovation Le Tallec recieved when he was subbed ... What a crowd we have.

Thoughts?

Yeah ALT did ok and did do well in the air.  I must point out though that Cannavaro is 5'7'' and Thuram (despite being a beast of a man) has spent most of his career as a right back and isn't as great in the air as he should be.  I thought we caused their defence problems with any sort of ball into the box, especially in the first half, and not just ALT either.

This could be the key to getting an away goal over there.  I'd be tempted to play five across the middle with maybe Nunez and Riise wide so they can whip in a few crosses.
