Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby stmichael » Thu Feb 24, 2005 4:14 pm

Last chance at the Last Chance Saloon; the  place where Mikey 'won us the Cup on his own'.  Maybe Steven Gerrard can read a few back issues of the Echo, and stage a re-run.
Go on Stevie; can't you just see the headlines?

"Captain Marvel saves Liverpool's bacon"
"Brave little Chelsea slip to unlucky 6 goal defeat"  (well, maybe not 6)
"One man show destroys Roman 's Dream"
"Mourinho sacked: 'I'm a failure'. He admits'"  (we can dream)

Meanwhile, back to reality; or what passes for it in the digital age:
Come on; hands up all those watching the Chelsea/Barca game last night who echoed Mike Basset by yelling at the TV screen :
"Nowt wrong with that!
Good decision Ref."
As the replay showed - in painfully slow motion - the Barca defender scraping his studs down the thigh of D Drogba?

Just me then.

Not that I'm bitter or anything.
It didn't take a 15 stone adrenalin-choked African Player of the Year to destroy the  LFC defence last year - tho having one sure helped Marseilles. Well, that and 'the hapless Igor'. (Pedants might recall that Stephane H was at CB in the first leg; and  DD brushing aside both H&H on his way to the 6 yard box at the Kop end after 3 minutes. Trouble! You thought; and you - and I - were right)

Still, Biscan is now restored to the Anfield pantheon,  after his heroics v Bayer Leverkusen.  (Surely we can find a shorter name for the ******?  It was bad enough  with Borussia  Moenchengladbach; - now try saying THAT when you're blathered out of your brain on vino,  euphoria and lack of sleep!)

Drogba though, is likely to be there to face our 'much vaunted' defence in the MMFinal.  And quite a handful he'll be. Sure, Gudjohnsen is perhaps the better link player, but DD is a real monster - as the Barca keeper found. I mean not many players have the bottle to splatter the home goallie in the Neucamp. Well not since the 1950s, anyway; & that CF who dumped the sainted ManU keeper on his butt, and out.  Nat Lofthouse aint around much these days; (tho Alan Shearer still does a fair impression of "Head 'em Down").

Now that the 'Special one' HAS finally lost 2 games in a row, how will his team react?
Out of one Cup - which they didn't seem THAT bothered about staying in. And apparently well in charge of a bore-fest in Barcelona; suddenly it all went wrong.

So HAS the bubble burst?
Or will the Reds catch the backlash from what doesn't AOTM still look like the best team in England?
After all, Duffer is back. Even at half-throttle, he still caused enough panic for an OG. 'The one that got away' is well capable of tearing apart our fragile defence. Will cries of "if only…" see us all crying into our beer come Sunday?
And that defence is still formidable; - even tho that kid with all the hair made Petr Cech finally look human.

And will it be that nice Dr Jekyll?
Or the villainous Mr Hyde?
That turns up in those red shirts.

WTF knows?

But just to really ruin your day; and as you pack your cases for the trek to Anfield South, just consider the following - with apologies to those who have read similar bore-posts before.(Sorry, but I haven't seen them)
We have LOST most of the games following our Euro nights, with 2 rather important exceptions:

1. Graz (a) - WIN - folowed by            DRAW v Spurs  (a)
2. Graz (h) - LOSS- followed by          LOSS  v Bolton (a)
3. Monaco  - WIN - followed by           LOSS  v ManU  (a)
4. Olympiakos (a) LOSS  followed by LOSS  v Chelsea(A)
5. Deportivo (h) -DRAW followed by   WIN    Charlton (h)
6. Deprotivo (a)  WIN -    followed by  LOSS v Brum (h)
7. Monaco   (a) LOSS followed by      WIN v Arsenal  (h)
8. Olympiakos (h) WIN followed         LOSS v Everton (a)

The actual sequence may not be that significant, cos this is after all an team which carries inconsistency to the point of mania.  But both those excellent wins came against good (or V good ) opposition; but both followed bad or at least disappointing results in the CL.
And the abilty to sustain good results and performances has been lacking this year (and last..).  Suspicion is that the team tends to get it together for a good Euro night; then loses focus/whatever come the weekend.
By contrast, a BAD Euro night has sparked a more resolute display ,

So the omens are not good; get out your lucky rabbit's foot; pay a visit to the druids down at The Pyramids on the Moor;
Do ,SOMETHING

BE LUCKY! as Michael Caine might say;
(trouble is I think he's another ***Chelsea fan)

Keep dreaming, and it may actually happen

Chelsea have the advantage in that they have the better players and have performed better as a team all season. However we've had 1 more days rest than them and they've also had to travel away to Spain while we had a home game.

Guys like Gerrard and Morientas have had a good rest and should be very fresh. We've already shown this season that we can raise our game and hopefully that happens again. Scoring against that tight defence wont be easy, but lets hope its our day and the team makes us proud.

is it me or did we not recently play a chelsea team equipped with both Duff and Robben off the park at Anfield? or has that been forgotten? one diabolical decision and a mighty slice of $*i*e luck put the points the wrong way, nothin else.
the one thing botherin me is cech playin instead of cudicini (tho it wouldnt be easy scorin past either) as it takes somethin special to put the ball past cech. be intrestin seein Nando up against their defence, i don't believe they have better players in the air than us but can we deliver the ball in the box?
my moneys on a one goal between us victory, be it 1-0 or 2-1, but i don't see it bein a classic as i think both teams'll shut each other out instead of goin for broke.
oh yeah, any guys out there not married and got no kids......? stay that way guys, the wife's told my daughter we're (me and the daughter) goin to the pix tomoro afternoon. keep an eye on the paper, there may be murder in the offin!!
Stu Averill, a wannabe Scouse/Scot. I remember the good times & have faith in them comin back

Beside the Hillsborough Flame, I heard a Koppite mournin, "Why so many taken on that day?" Justice has never been done. But their memory we'll carry on. There'll be Glory Round The Fields Of Anfield Road
