Fulham linked with Smicer swoop
Written by Daniel Crawford

Sunday, 04 July 2004
Fulham boss Chris Coleman is reportedly ready to offer Liverpool £2m for midfielder Vladimir Smicer, who is apparently surplus to requirements as Rafael Benitez puts together his new-look squad.
Smicer featured in the Czech Republic's impressive run to the semi-finals of Euro 2004 in Portugal, but has failed to find his best form at Anfield. Coleman is rumoured to believe Smicer could add a bit more invention to a Fulham midfield that already contains the stylish Steed Malbranque and speedy Luis Boa Morte.

Considering that the Sunday People have only just discovered that we return to Craven Cottage with a friendly against Watford on Saturday, the validity of the story must be called into question.

I'd keep him for this season and see how he does. If he performs to the quality that we remember, keep him on, on a rolling contract or something. If he doesn't look at all good, flog him for what we can get. Two million sounds good and we could buy the mid-field equivelant of Carson. It's all gonna depend on how he does right now.

Smicer is one of few available mid solutions at the moment. He can be a good ball passer particularly to Baros. At his better performance, he was always be a mid key player that makes the difference to the result.

Under Houllier  Vlad played 1 excellent  2 poor and one down right sh!te game in that order  consistently ..........compare that to the likes of Traore Kewell  Biscan Finnan etc as to how they all played under Houllier and how they play now  then id say Smicer will be worth 20 million  by the end of the season.........lets face it Traore and Biscan were pants and now are playing pretty good :D :D :D

P.s. the 20million was purely tongue in cheek :p

he can play at the right wing where he can replace garcia or nunez if both of them are injured or out of form, i agree he can work well with baros ... :)

Smicer is a class player and having forwards who find space, look for a pass and can control a ball will only help him regain his credibility.

I was never a fan of Smicer but I think I said last summer that he was one of the more likelier players to show a massive improvement under Benitez and I think we might see him doing something this season.

That story sounds rubbish to me, he is out of contract at the end of the season so why would fulham offer 2 million??  They could get him on a pre-contract for nothing.

He is on the bench for fulham game today and if he gets fit before the end of the season I reckon rafa will offer a 1 year deal, no more as he is 31.

Not a bad squad player to have, talented but inconsistent

I am an armchair fan at the moment and during commentaries I listened to on the radio, I would get impatient because everytime Smicer was mentioned, he gave the ball away and I wondered why we bothered with him and Hammann, if truth be told. Then I saw a game on telly, don't ask which one, but it was during Houlliers time, we were losing and I was frustrated with the overall performance, then smicer came on, and Hammann and the team played so differently it was amazing. We played with nous, ie tactical awareness. It was their experience we lacked, we managed to win too. I hope Smicer improves with Rafa, cos there is no doubt he gives 100%

It doesn't matter if we want him or don't its does Benitzes want him that counts and hes got to perfom quickly to make an impression on Benitzes if he wants to stay here :)

Garcia, Baros, Moro and Smicer must all go to the same hairdresser. The question is which one?
