Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby wet echo » Tue Jan 18, 2005 11:48 am

it does suprise me the lack of respect that some posters have for either the players or the other posters ,Liverpool supporters we know are or were famous throughout the football world for two things, one was passion of support and the other knowledge of the game, weaved into this was a sporstmanship second to none and although we could find it hard at times to except the result we tried to prevent the name of the club being dragged down by the media (and my god has it has it had its moments in the recent past) by displaying some form of grace in defeat.
The actions of an individual on saturday by throwing a mobile at a player was unexceptable irrespective of who he was playing for or his own actions,my mind often goes back to moments that made the name of Liverpool football club a name to be spoken of with such pride, these were not the 18 championships or the 4 european championships but moments in defeat when we showed the footballing world that it takes a supporters of a special kind to show grace after a defeat has taken place...Leeds the championship Anfield ...Arsenal the championship at Anfield only weeks after so many had lost there lives, also remember Brian Clough standing in front of a baying Kop with his fingers in his ears before the European tie only to walk away with the kop chanting his name.
I know there are many who will more than likely reply with witty onliners or maybe abusive as is becoming the trend on forums today but i do feel that although Liverpool the team is going through a transitional period the supporters shouldnt.
Maybe my views are a little rose tinted but iam proud to have supported this great club through the great days of Shankley to the present day from boys pen to the Spion Kop and iam also mindful that my actions wether they be in print or deed can damage the great name of Liverpool supporters, a name we should all try to protect for others to use

Good post and good points Echo . Times however like the team have changed . It's no longer easy to accept defeat from our great rivals with good grace after years and years of frustration ,perhaps if the little fat boy had just wheeled away and celebrated his goal with his team mates there would have been no problem but to stand in front of the kop and bait us is frankly asking for trouble.
My biggest regret is that the enraged fan who threw the phone missed !!!

hi woof,i know times have changed but the feelings of frustration dont believe me,take the night when Greenhoff scored for Man u in the semi final at Goodison and ran away doing a weird dance kissing the air....phew thank god i didnt have a gun that night.. :D
but times change but as individuals we shouldnt be reduced to what is passed off as the exceptable norm as a form of support...cheers anyway mate

Im with wet echo on this. I've said it before and I make no apology for saying it again, us OOTers don't have quite the same electricity surge as the true fully blown scousers. I don't hate Rooney (I don't hate anyone truth be known, lifes too short but I digress) anything like in a comparible way to the way say Leon or Lynds feels about him. Having said that, my sister didn't go to school with his big brother, my mum didn't used to be his dinner lady and I don't have a family of blue-noses living over the back fence.
It's easy for armchair season-ticket holders like myself to remain dispassionate (and if I lobbed a mobile phone at the telly the dog would probably chew it) but even so I'm not inclined to applaud the lad who let his emotions get the better of him. Thin end of the wedge and all that, before you know it our ex-players will not get a good reception and we're on our way to becoming the same as everyone else.
This is the crux see. The mancs hate us because of all our success but mostly they hate the fact that we are better than them, pure and simple. "Always look on the bright side of life" is a nice tune but it aint YNWA. They don't sing it when they're staring defeat in the face. They don't sing it when adversity is all around. They can't show respect via slences like a Liverpool crowd can. You can't imagine a lower league team winning in the cup at Old trafford and getting applauded off. It's cos we're better, you're better if you prefer. Maintain it and cherish it because its one of the things which make the club special.

Im gonna be controversial

I agree with wet echo 100% but can we not paint a false image as this type of thing always happens and always has happened, ok I might not condone it but to make out its a new development is IMO wrong

Ive been on the Kop in the 80,s 90,s and 21 Century and the main issue I see is loss of the togetherness there used to be and lack of success plays a huge part as well

My other sporting passion is Welsh Rugby and we used to have a rep as great fans and deserved as well but new stadium and commercialism has eradicated a lot of that, ironically it was when we played in wembley while our stadium was being built that the tickets went to fans who havent been for a while and the atmosphere was better

Clubs want familys who spennd money on food and merchandise but you will lose some atmosphere.

The only thing I can think would help is to allow people to sit where they want so groups can be together, and it was the main group on the Kop who started the atmosphere years ago

The main thing however is success on the pitch, how long can you sing about being fourth and semi finals is a good achievment

The FA cup win against Arsenal proved that its still there but I imagine that a lot of what your looking for might have gone for ever

thankyou Bigmick, and please never apologise for being an OOT in the older days we took pride in wearing REDS ALL OVER WORLD  scarves and that was not just for the places we visited.
Hi Taff, i see your point but and yes problems have always been there and Liverpool like every other club business comes first it always did and i also understand that, that is for the directors to takecare of and ensure the survival of the club on a financial level, but the rest is for us to put right thats why Shankley felt so strong about the city and is people and this was allowed to manifest itself in Liverpool football club.
Being respected or respecting other teams does not start with success it only enhances that success in others eyes once it has been acheived.
It has been a much use quote in football that "form is tempory class is permanent" that applies to support also i believe.
I see your point however on the seating in the kop which inhibits singing, but its the more general approach to support on forums and the reaction to defeat which i was trying to high light..thanks for the input:)

the forum serves as a place where, on occaisions like the weekend, angers and frustrations can be vented in safety. i also think its impossible to take anything said between saturday lunchtime and monday morning at absolute face value. many people came on here to have a good shout and a scream, to get things of our chests.

views expressed at times like this mustn't be taken as the core beliefs of the members of the forum. hidden away amongst thousands of posts you wil find the real feelings towards the club and the supporters from every member. these feelings vary in their intensity and are expressed in a variety of ways due to a rich mixture of old school scousers, younger lads and girls, foreigners, ooters, armchair fans and serial match goers etc etc etc.

the uniting factor is that we're all 100% behind the club in terms of wanting whats best and desiring that success. football fans are by their nature a volatile and vocal bunch. as long as i've been going to matches there have been insults hurled at players, both ours and theirs, from the terraces - i don't think there's been a time when it hasn't been true. i'm sure all those soundtracked black and white newsreels from the 40s and 50s hide all sorts of 'evils'. its easy to look back and say how things were better. but if you look closely at the present LFC has a support that is amongst the very best in the world.

Hello wet Echo, good name by the way I presume its a reference to th eold terracing days relieving oneself after a few ales :D

I think weve got the right manager off the pitch as well as he's made some great quotes in my view and is studying the history of the club

I imagine its frustration on the forum to be honest, some of the comments do my head in but I find it best not to get involved as th eone thing we all have in common is the club which is in our hearts for life

You are right about the support thing being permenant I guess we all have to be aware of it as complacency can easily set in

Just to finish

YNWA  :)
