Now thats  a differnt story no-one is sugesting that we should not stregthen the attack in Jan because of Mellor but conversely if were bieng hypothetical what if Mellor bangs in another 5 before Jan  ???

Jiziz crist. Get real. After watchin Mellor in several games we all see what he is about. A moment of mad luck changes nothing. He is nothing. He is last in line to play, and he is only playing because we have NO ONE ELSE. I would prefer ANY striker in ANY team in the premiership to Mellor. Les Ferdinand, Paul Dickov, hell any pizz poor premiership striker will improve us now. Mellor is a baby, a nothing. I am happy for his goal and his moment in the spotlight, but my thing ain't about looking back, it is about looking forward. Mellor ain't the future. Pure and simple. He is 4 years older than Ronaldo, 5 years older than Fernando Torres, 5 years older than Rooney, He is almost as old as Gerrard and the same age as Alonso. Well that is the level he should be playing at if he was to have a future here. Can't believe that you guys have been so accustomed to playing second fiddle to United, Arsenal and the lot so you accept a player like Mellor in our ranks. We will never win anything with such quality here. We would have been relegated by december if Mellor kind of players came into majority here.
If football is banned in heaven. I'd rather go to hell.

That would make Ronaldo 18, Torres 17 and Rooney 17!  :D

Banana I think you are missing the point. Nobody here thinks that we should stick with Mellor for the whole season. All we are saying that Mellor is good enough for the time being, meaning when Baros,Garcia return Mellor will not play again propably.

He may be the crappiest Premiership striker but that is not the point, the point is that he got the job done yesterday. If he can get the job done for the time being then the best thing you should do is cheer on the lad. He is no Robbie Fowler,Kenny Dalglish,etc.... but if he can score at vital times such as yesterday then who the ****** cares if he is a piece of garbage?

We have no choice but to play him and when our players return from injury and we sign a new striker you propably won't see him again.

I agree with you AB, and I think Mick and banana are quoting us all out of context.

If you want more time, fine then take it. if you think he's good enough, fine also come out and say it. This is a forum of opinions though and I've got one. Mellor isn't good enough. I repeat, if I'm wrong I'll eat my keyboard.

Mick

I admire your clear stance on Neil Mellor, but Im opting for the more time option.

He didn't get much supply yesterday, but he won us a lot of possession and held the ball up well.

He's only 22, has hardly any first team football, and is a big strong centre forward.

And he scores goals. With good midfield supply I dont see why he couldn't score a hatful. He scores and thats all I need from him.

I think most people here are selling him short. I dont see why he couldn't be more prolific than Macken or Bent or any 'average' Premiership striker.

Football is too hard to call to be that sure.

I know he's always scored goals and am looking forward to him getting a decent run in the team. I could see him playing with Baros too.

For Chrissakes give Mellor a chance, he's just scored the winner against Arsenal. I mean so what if he does f*ck all else but score. I don't see Van Horseface bringing a huge amount else bar goals to United. Now I'm not saying Mellor is anywhere near that good but so far he has never let Liverpool down and he ran himself stupid for the team on Sun.

He needs to get fit first and foremost. He isn't particularly over weight, its just the wrong sort of weight, it should all be muscle a bit like Gerrard.

He should work on his fitness and do some sprint and reflex training aswell as stamina training.

He can improve technically, although he isn't bad here, he isn't good either, he's just average technically.

Intelligence is where he's decent. He can spot an opening and his movement is clever. He also makes intelligent runs and holds the ball up ok. If he improves a little bit physically and technically he'll become even better in this area. He can and always will score goals because of this in a similar way to Earnshaw bigmick :D I'm not saying he's as good obviously, but i would expect Mellor to get around 15 goals a season at least if he played 90 minutes every week.

His attitude and work rate is superb and if he keeps this up we could have a player who's capable of scoring goals, holding the ball up, putting defenders under ALOT of pressure and winning games for us which would mean he'd be a decent backup player in the future should anything like this happen again.

The lad needs to get fit tho first and foremost, the fitter he gets, the faster he'll become, the more stamina he'll gain and the more confidence it will give him.

Couldn't agree more. Mellor is no Fowler but he can get the job done for now as far as scoring goals goes.
