i was slagging mellor off all game today. top marks for effort but he just looked not up to it.

but then that goal!

if that boosts his confidence is he gonna start being a good striker for us?

He has still a lot of work to do. The goal was sensational, but maybe if he works hard for 2-3 years he can get some more strenght and pace and some experience. I was a bit angry at him until he scored, because a better striker would have been able to get on some of the crosses put in the box, and he alway was half a second late in all situations.

Agreed.

I thought he had a brilliant game today. He won a lot of possession as a lone striker, and his workrate was immense. Hes scored a lot of goals for the reserves, give him a chance.

ok - maybe fat is a bit harsh. he's just big boned! :;):

we've seen he can finish as well as the rest. he heeds a bit more match fitness and a yard more pace. with the confidence he must have taken from this game i'm feeling pretty optimistic

He deserves alot of credit because at such an early stage in his Liverpool 1st team career he has been forced to carry the full weight of our striking burden. It would have been easy for him to hide n shirk his responsibility, but that is just not Mellors style. He'll keep puttin himself about and if we create chances he can finish them off :) Did well today lets hope it can spur him on

hes still a new guy to the first team
give the kid a break, he was playing against the veterans. He did score which is great for him. I believe he and pongolle just need to start more and then u will see some results.

Hold my hands up, I've slagged him in the past but fair play, he did well today. The goal was fantastic and was probably his "Ronnie Radford" moment. All that said, though in my heart I almost blubbed for him when the goal went in, in my head I'm convinced that he aint up to the job. Whatever though, he'll probably remember that goal for the rest of his life and I probably will for the rest of mine. Thanks Neil, a moment to treasure. See he's worked on the celebrations aswell. No more of that raving dervish jumping around.

I think we should stop gassing about whether he'll make it, and whether he's going to build upon today's goal, and just congratulate him on what he managed to pull out of the hat for us today.

I only heard the game on the radio, and once it emerged through Alan Green's screams that it was Mellor that had scored, I was just delighted for him. We shouldn't underestimate the pressure he's under - he was probably 5th or 6th choice up front going into this season - and I just hope he continues to give a good account of himself. I'm sure he knows that everyone is viewing him as a stopgap, but if he can show us that he's better than that, and worthy of consideration up against the likes of Baros, then that'd be just fantastic.

I'd have snatched your hands off for a draw before the game today, and to come away with three points is just sensational. Well done lad. 3 goals in 5 games :)
