The way we've conducted our business in the transfer market today, and for the past couple of years for what its worth, has been nothing short of a shambles.
We are rightfully the laughing stock of every football fan around the globe and to make matters worse we seem to be relishing it. Buying Carroll for 35mill was a mistake that had everyone laughing at us. Sending him out on loan a year later is unheard of, idiotic, unprofessional, a sign of a club poorly run..etc etc If his 50K a week was the only thing stopping us from signing a top player (which was never going to be the case) then I would have perhaps had an ounce of respect for the decision to let him go. As it turns out, it didnt, and I dont.
I also find it extremely annoying and unprofessional that the club goes after some players so aggressively thus leading them to hand transfer requests and fall out with their clubs without seeing the transfer through. We've done it with Barry, Adam, Dempsey and thats only in the last 3 years and the high profile ones i can remember. I'm glad Barry ended up at City and Dempsey is on his way to Tottenham (both clubs that are miles ahead of us atm) because I can't imagine how terrible it would have been if it happened to one of us in our normal, publicity-free jobs.
Starting now, we go into a pivotal season for us (where we'll most likely play more games than any other side in the league) with a squad that barely makes the numbers. A squad that is so short of quality in some areas that we'll have to rely on players who for all intents and purposes should still be training with the reserves and under 18s never-mind playing against some of the top sides in the world.
So here it is. The roundup of our attacking options:
Wingers
Our only established winger: Downing (0 goals and 0 assists despite playing 36 league games last season).
Other options: Borini (a centerforward being played out of position who has a CV that reads: Backup player for fumbling Roma last season, 11 Championship appearances for Swansea the year before and....ermm... thats all)
Other options: Sterling (a 17 year old who has started 2 games in his career. A very promising kid and probably our best wide player but his age and physique, coupled with his lack of experience mean that he can't be relied on)
Other options: Cole (if he ever manages to stay injury free, he'd still be Sh*t)
Other options: Assaidi (a relatively unknown player signed for a nominal fee. Another player lacking in experience and most fans don't even remember he signed until someone brings his name up)
Verdict: We're taking a huge gamble with this group of players. None of them are proven and all we can do at this point is HOPE that Downing improves from last season and that Borini and Assaidi can provide a significant contribution to the side.
Strikers
Our only established forward: Suarez (would have been one of the best forwards in the world if he had better finishing. He does'nt, so we'll have to stick to calling him one of the best players. Desperately needs someone ( a poacher) who is able to capitalize on all the chances he creates but on his own, he can't be relied on to score consistently, or enough.
Other options: Morgan (shouldnt be anywhere near the first team if we are honest. Still has a lot of learning to do and the less said the better)
Verdict: We're taking a huge gamble with the lack of options and more importantly goals upfront. We are shockingly thin in this department and all we can do is HOPE that Suarez remains fit, available and improves from the poor finishing he displayed throughout his Liverpool career so far.
