Rafa's Young Cubs Tame Millwall's Lions
A first half goal from Salif Diao and two second half strikes from Milan Baros ensured Rafael Benitez made a perfect start to his domestic cup career as Liverpool boss.
The Reds had never played at the New Den before but despite leaving the pitch battered and bruised from a series of scathing challenges from Kevin Muscat in particular, his young side did their new boss proud.
Benitez had made 10 changes from the side who beat Charlton at Anfield on Saturday with no fewer than four Youth Academy graduates in Neil Mellor, Stephen Warnock, Zak Whitbread and Darren Potter starting the match. Only Whitbread, however, had never featured before in a competitive match for the Reds.
The three goals which ensured Liverpool's hopes of landing the cup for a record eighth time remain alive came from two of the more senior internationals in the experimental line-up.
Diao's low strike after 17 minutes was the direct result of the home side failing to clear a corner and while it sent the Reds in 1-nil up at the interval, the result was practically sealed with 20 minutes remaining when Baros, on as a substitute for Neil Mellor, hit a low drive beyond the Millwall goalkeeper. If Millwall thought they might still be able to fight their way back into the tie, those hopes were finally killed off when Baros added his second and Liverpool's third in injury time.
Despite the scoreline, Liverpool had to battle for this win and Rafael Benitez will have learnt a lot about some of the more inexperienced players in his squad. The faces may have changed from Saturday, but the result was exactly the same. A good night's work, all in all.
Final Score: Millwall 0 Liverpool 3
