so liverpool looks as though it is going to become the first british city to ban public smoking after proposals were passed by the house of commons the other day. anyone caught will be fined £1000.

is this a good or a bad idea?

Smoking in the workplace,pubs etc has been banned here in Ireland since April.The pubs are a bit quieter but it seems to be working in general.Its worked for me anyway,i gave up the smokes when the ban came in.

Good idea - a pain in the ****** but a good idea. I'm an ex-smoker and still crave a cig when I'm in the boozer and can smell the smoke and see other people smoking. So a smoke-free pub would'nt tempt me back on the tabs

Also I started smoking in the first place by being in the pub etc. If boozers were no-smoking zones I probably wouldn't ever have started.

From an obscure viewpoint, if smoking remains legal everywhere it's only a matter of time till all your favourite boozers/clubs etc get stung by compensation claims from former staff and have to double the price of your pint to foot the bill.

Normally I'm all for freedom of choice and let people do what they want cos we're all adults but on this one the argument's stacked too heavily in favour of a ban. The only alternative is to allow pubs to choose whether to be non-smoking or not.

Two of my work colleagues were fined the other day.

£50 each, although this was for littering, (dropping the cigarette butts on the floor) not for smoking.

Personally, I don't smoke.

What is beyond New Labour is a little bit of common sense - and I don't mean the classic tory slogan.

Why not give some sort of tax break to landlords to turn their pubs into non-smoking ones and let the rest have a little bit of freedom of choice? It's quite simple and relatively painless. Or encourage pubs in a nearby vicinity to work something out?

I think if your caught smoking in a no smoking area you should have the still lit cig inserted in your bum hole.

Great idea, why not just eliminate smoking alltogether, that wud be fun
