I fear that the big geordie will be chosen at Man City tomorrow, meaning one less player linking up with play, and we will be outnumbered in midfield. Besides bringing him on for the last 5 or 10 minutes in games when we just start launching it into the box, i dont see a purpose for him.

Happy New year to one and all.

Alot of our fans like to give stick to Heskey but I must say that Heskey's contribution to the team is very underrated. First of all he is a perfect foil for Owen and when Owen broke down one season, Emile Heskey took up the scoring mantle and scored 22 goals or so... Andy has a long way to go IMO...

I am extremely optimistic.  Carroll looked extremely dangerous when Gerrard was on.  Gerrard's capable of giving the balls we need.  Maybe if we sign a right winger in January that also has this ability (maybe Juan Vargas?) then we'd have a couple options.  People don't give credit to Joey Barton for the services he gave to Carroll.  It's Adam's job, but he seriously fecks up more then half the set pieces he takes.  I don't know what's going on with him but he's been really poor with set pieces and we need Stevie to take them again.

Carroll should be given as much credit for our second goal if not more then Bellers.  If Bellers shot had gone in and AC hadn't followed the defender who stepped back, the defender wouldn't have gotten in the way of the keeper.  BUt with Carroll there he was in the way, the defender and keeper tried to just throw themselves in front of it because they thought he'd get a touch, and it ended up in the back of the net.

Just heard on TS that there is talk (potential at least) of Andy Carroll being loaned backed to Newcastle.  Hmmmm, if true, I don't think it would be a good idea, considering Suarez being banned for 8 games.

Cant see us loaning him out, Kenny will give him at least till the end of the season to prove himself, and probably longer.

I do think we will bring in a different kind of striker in this transfer window, just not sure who it will be

I heard that to. I don't see the point in it to be honest, we may as well of signed him but left him there for another season. We bought him on his displays for Newcastle so we already knew he could play for a small team. What we need to do is try and get the best out of him while playing for us. Stevie gave him more service in the last 20 minutes or so than he has had since he signed. I hope to see a new Andy once Stevie starts to whip the balls in to him. He just need to know that if he makes the run, finds the space then the ball will come and not miles over his head when he wants it to feet or have to re check his run because the ball is not crossed first time His confidence is already shot to bits, that move would be on a par with him signing up to this site and reading his thread !

I know his confidence is low and he has his limitations but the service he received tonight was absolutely woeful.Downing is really struggling and I don't why he stayed on and Kuyt went off?

Very true.

Due to his limitations on the floor and lack of talent on the ball i'm not a fan, however, because he is a player 100% reliant on service into the box (put on a plate for him to get on the end of.. either header, or dropping on his left foot), if the midfield isnt doing this (as was inevitably the case last night with the five we had) then he will be anonymous. Whilst on one hand the midfield wasnt good enough, the reason i will be happy to see the back of Carroll is we need forwards who can make stuff happen for themselves.. which both Suarez and Bellamy do. They both come deep and link up with the midfield, demand the ball, then run at defences. Carroll offers none of this.

The only circumstance on which a team could accept the limitations of a player being 100% reliant on service, is IF he was also a deadly finisher.. ie.Lineker.. and Andy Carroll is far from that. Fowler wasn't the world's best outfield player himself, he didnt exactly link up brilliantly with midfield, you didnt see him drift out to the flanks and cut inside to play someone in, but what he did do is when he was given the ball in and around the box his finishing was deadly.

There are the #7 or #10 creative forwards (who are not prolific but they create havoc, carve defences apart and assist.. Beardsley, Suarez, Dalglish, Sheringham, Zola).. theres the prolific #9 finishers (Fowler, Rush, Lineker, Muller, Shearer, Ronaldo).. then there is the extra special hybrid who have both (Pele, Messi, Henry).

Carroll fits into none of these three categories.. there is no creativity, there is no finishing, what there is is a player who waits on stuff landing on his head.. ala Niall Quinn.

Looking at our forward, and the midfield five prior to kick off, you would be hard pushed to have been optimistic going into the game. A 5 in midfield of Kuyt, Downing, Spearing, Adam, Henderson...i can honestly say i wouldnt miss any of them. Never can i recall a midfield where there isnt at least one quality player (over the past 20 years.. McManaman, Redknapp, McAllister, Gerrard, Hamann, Alonso, Mascherano).. christ even Murphy, Garcia and Berger are a class above what we had in there last night.

Surely thats the end of Kuyt? Bought as a forward, and unlike the ere divisie couldn't cut it upfront in the Premiership ala Kezman, so was then shoved out to the right due to having a tireless work ethic and providing a defensive shield for the right back. Its not enough, and its now been five years with a subpar right flank. He should be warmly thanked for his work ethic, the odd crucial goal every now and then (especially in Europe), and not being a problem once in five years, but we need to move on with far better.

Downing, massive disappointment. I genuinely felt he would be a good signing (and he could still be) as i thought he was a tidy player, head up and was aware of what was around him. But he has shown none of that with us thus far, and his aimless shot straight at Hart when clean through was no surprise.

A central trio of Spearing, Adam, Henderson is not going to pull up any trees. You could imagine that trio lining up for Blackburn, or Bolton. Can't fault the workrate or effort of any of them, but the lack of quality is evident. Having said that  Henderson did produce the one quality moment from midfield in putting Downing through, following up from putting Gerrard through in the last game, so there are signs he is showing more and more..but he needs true class alongside him to develop more (where Gerrard comes in hopefully)

the service was utterly abysmal into him last night. he's never going to thrive if we just continuously chip or float balls into the box. he needs the ball whipped in with pace to attack. you saw him come alive the other day when gerrard came on and whipped in three world class balls.

Kerry mate I know I have thrown a few ugly insults in your direction recently for which I make no apologies. You are one long endless list of negativity and frankly it is depressing. Kuyt was our top scorer last season and you castigate him. It is not Dirk that isn't good enough it is what he has had around him. When Torres was scoring for fun Dirk was heavily involved in a lot of the goals.

Was listening to John Anderson (ex-Toon) on the radio this evening and they rate getting rid of him as a good piece of business. Can't see that he's get a game for them now anyway....they're playing good footie tonight...
