but the case would still stand that we (this side of the world) would only have to deal with poor sun light and temp of around -8 for a year. water would be the first problm but its said we would be able to deal with that in the spce of 2 weeks and with most parts of the uk wll have clean water in 6 weeks.

most power stations in the uk will still be running and in the event of a short fall the coal power stations will open back up their closed parts like Tilbury in essex.

with 90% of noth america gone life will not be the same, in fact we would be taken back by 200 years.

Yes but arent they saying that its due to erupt anytime now.

That's what they are saying mate, I read an article last month that there was a lot of seismic activity going on in the area and that is a worrying sign. However the seismic activity has stopped now. We never know when it will erupt! It could be a year or 2 or even after a hundred years.

Lakes, I hope it won't be that catastrophic, just watched a documentary about in discovery channel and its terrifying

Difficult to pinpoint it down if its every 600,000 years  :D

I saw that documentary as well, 'definitely end of the world' scenario and all that :help

Realistically, the ultimate survival of humans depends on our ability to find a compatible planet for us to live on.  And i don't think we're close to that...

Or alternatively, over time we'll evolve and adapt to whatever the planet throws at us. Getting deep for a footy forum :D

you know its true! I'm very interested in astrophysics and the study of the universe, especially how the universe works. I read an article a few days ago about the discovery of a couple of earth like planets that are situated around a red dwarf, which is 10 times bigger than our sun :D The closest one to us is 20.3 light years away and its been told that it ''might'' hold signs of life because of where its situated (not too far or close from the sun)  has oceans and its temperature is similar to ours. We still don't have the technology yet to study its atmosphere or the organic materials or elements found in the planet, so hopefully we will have that technology to know if there are extra terrestrials and if its habitable for us to live in!

I know it has nothing to do with the volcano, but with jacdaniel bringing it up I couldn't stop commenting about it :D

yes but thats the discovery channel for you, they know it will make sit down and put it on.

it will be bad, very very bad, end of the world........no.

life will still go on, man will still live.well some of us anyway.

best place said to be is the himalayas, apart from a few floods most parts will be above the ash. its also said the ash will be made up of more solid ash, this means it might not stay in the air for long.

Where do you get your info lakes? 5 live? Lol just kidding

The last major eruption 600,000 years ago led to a mass extenction of many species, so let's hope your right mate :D

I think we have discovered around 7 super volcanoes and scientists still believe there are more so its interesting to know.

Anyways we will find out when one of them erupts :D

Copied by me:

Is it true that the next caldera-forming eruption of Yellowstone is overdue?

No. First of all, one cannot present recurrence intervals based on only two values. It would be statistically meaningless. But for those who insist... let's do the arithmetic. The three eruptions occurred 2.1 million, 1.3 million and 0.64 million years ago. The two intervals are thus 0.8 and 0.66 million years, averaging to a 0.73 million-year interval. Again, the last eruption was 0.64 million years ago, implying that we are still about 90,000 years away from the time when we might consider calling Yellowstone overdue for another caldera-forming eruption. Nevertheless, we cannot discount the possibility of another such eruption occurring some time in the future, given Yellowstone's volcanic history and the continued presence of magma beneath the Yellowstone caldera.

The most likely type of eruption would not be volcanic but, rather, hydrothermal. This type of small, but still explosive eruption can occur from shallow reservoirs of steam or hot water rather than molten rock. These reservoirs are the sources of Yellowstone's famous geysers, hot springs, and fumaroles. Such explosions could blast out shallow craters more than a kilometer wide; as has occurred in the northern Yellowstone Lake Basin, including Mary Bay and nearby Turbid Lake and Indian Pond, and in western Yellowstone National Park north of Old Faithful. Each of these craters was produced by steam blasts within the past few thousand years.

The most likely type of volcanic eruption at Yellowstone would produce lava flows of either rhyolite or basalt; rhyolitic lava eruptions could also include explosive phases that might produce significant volumes of volcanic ash and pumice. Such eruptions could range in size from smaller than the 1980 eruption of Mt. St. Helens through much larger than the 1991 Mount Pinatubo eruption.

The least likely but worst-case volcanic eruption at Yellowstone would be another explosive caldera-forming eruption such as those that occurred 2.1 million, 1.3 million, and 640,000 years ago. However, the probability of such an eruption in any given century or millennium is exceedingly low, much lower than the smaller eruptions mentioned above.

If that type of eruption were to occur, it would have a devastating effect on America and possibly result in a volcanic winter. However, as mentioned above, there is no reason to believe that it will happen in any particular century.

I thought that all the doomsday bs would start next year, looks like I was wrong !

So what will cause all of our demise? global warming? god? mother nature?

nope, the constant "The End of the World is Nigh !" cack that will be constantly sprouted for the next couple of years or so due to people killing themself to get away from it !

Thank christ for Ryan Giggs ! :D

Looks like alot of the cloud is heading towards europe. I guess flights to the east could be re-routed. I hope it don't intervene with the flight route. Certain european countries could block air space which could infact cancel flight going through that air space.

No use dwelling over something like this. Civilisations have always come and gone, the earth will always find a way to replenish itself and support new life. Would be mad if it did happen though.
