san francisco, well known for the golden gate bridge, but few know it is also the state fruit of California.

i lived in LA for eight years, i love that place, but i have to agree with the lot here saying that san francisco is by far a nicer place. actually, it might just be the most beautiful city on the west coast, and i've been to all the major ones. (seattle, portland, sacramento [bleh], la and san diego)

the weather's beautiful - especially if you're the type that prefers it colder than warmer. its not rainy like seattle, and its not 90% filled with beaners like la. (cali joke. :D  ) and there isnt a place i've been to where i have encountered a more diverse population. by diverse, i mean diverse. there are literally all kinds of people in san francisco. some even undiscovered.

besides the obvious ones, there are gay people, hippies. a lot of hippies. and hipsters. cant forget about those hipsters, you'll learn to spot one a mile away. they usually look like bums and they like to ride old bicycles. and the place is full of asians. filipinos/viets/chinese/koreans/japs. and armenians. russians.

if i could put it simply, its probably the closest thing to a place like New York, that could be found on the West Coast.

its a beautiful, cultured city. but also an expensive one to live in. :p

I spent 5 days in San Fran around 6 years ago and I loved it. Every morning walk down to Pier 39 (or whatever it was called) and watch the seals play on the rocks, we found a bar that did fab BBQ ribs and steak, the golden gate bridge is just a big bridge but alcatraz was fooking spooky, well worth a visit. One night around 10pm there was a chill in the air so we walked into the town and had a bowl of chowder to warm us up - wonderful.

I'd live there tomorrow if it was possible.

Fishermans Wharf was the place we stayed.

Next to Pier 39 was Pier 41(more industrial) where I would buy live anchovies ( a scoop for $20) to fish with in the San Fransisco Bay. To get to the place by boat you had to go by an old marina with seals basking on the jetties and you had to actually get quite close to the seals as you passed them. As you pass them they would growl, hot steam came out of their mouths and their breath stunk like rotten fish. :)

Drifting in the SF Bay with a panaramic view of the Golden Gate Bridge, Angel Island, Alcatraz and the city will never be forgotten.

By the way, Pier 39 has a place that sells the best sour dough bread you ever tasted.

Also, if you decide to do the tour of Alcatraz. Pay extra for the night tour - it's far more atmospheric walking through an island prison at night. You also get a nice panorama of downtown SF skyline.
