Liverpool reject £40 million bid from Chelsea for striker Fernando Torres
Liverpool have confirmed that they have rejected a £40 million bid for striker Fernando Torres.

The Spanish international has been linked with a host of clubs over the past 12 months, including Manchester City and Barcelona, but Chelsea have made the first move.
A Liverpool spokesman said last night: "Chelsea have made an offer for Fernando, which has been rejected. The player is not for sale."
Premier League champions Chelsea are believed to have had a £52 million bid for Atletico Madrid striker Sergio Aguero and defender Diego Godin rejected earlier this week, and have now turned their attentions closer to home.
But having met stiff resistance from the Anfield hierarchy, it remans uncertain whether they will improve their offer for Torres, who has shown signs in recent weeks of returning to his best form.

a serious bid from a major rival ...this will seriously test our resolve, and the extent of our ambitions in retaining our best players

They have been told he isn't for sale. Don't really expect Chelsea to make any silly bid of 100 mil either. But that's not to say he couldn't leave in the future if we don't start strengthening the squad.

Agreed.  Torres actually seems like a very loyal person.  Look at how long he stayed at Atletico until he realized he had to continue on in his career.  He won't ever consider playing for Real.  I highly doubt he will consider playing for manure, arsenal or chelsea just because he seems to really grow fond of the clubs he plays with.  I think he wants to stay a Liverpool player, especially now that he has had some great form.  He's been scoring a lot, even though some aren't counting (Dam male refs!   :p  )

He seems excited to work with Dalglish and see where the club will go.

Yeah, who is currently plying his trade at a midtable club.

World class players wants to be at club that match their ambitions. And that release clause was most likely a fail safe for Torres if the club doesn't do that.

Technically we couldn't refuse that bid without breaching his contract.

no we couldn't do anything with a £50m bid, but we'd just have to hope that Torres is the loyal and true player that he comes across as, and he turns them down

What it would mean is that Liverpool would have to agree the deal in principle. Leaving the move to hinge on the player.

If that scenario was to occur, I am not sure Torres wouldn't be swayed. He would become the highest paid player in the league, no doubt about it.

we dont know 100% what was in his contract, could offers over 50mil. could even be 1p over the 50mil.

going by reports this morning the offer was 40mil with another 1mil to pe paid over the next few years.
that still works out at 50mil.

the only bit i did no like wa when sky said that Torreshad said in the summer in a interview in spain that he likes london and would by a house there one day as he see it as an investment.
