Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Liverpool have been handed a boost with the news that Fernando Torres could be fit for the start of the new season.

The Spanish FA confirmed earlier on Wednesday that Torres suffered a grade one tear to his groin in Sunday's World Cup final with Holland.

It was feared Torres could face a lengthy spell on the sidelines with the injury, but Liverpool's medical staff feel the striker faces three weeks out of action after assessing the problem.

The club are now hopeful the 26-year-old could be back in action in time for their opening league fixture against Arsenal on 15th August.

Liverpool's head of sports science and medicine Peter Brukner told the club's official website: "The initial assessment was he had a mild adductor tear and the Spanish medial staff didn't consider it to be too serious at the time.

"He had an MRI scan yesterday which confirmed a small tear. He should be able to resume training within two to three weeks and be able to play again within three to four weeks."

Hodgsen could go for an unknown from Scandinavia. Maybe someone like Marcus Berg..... We absolutely need an alternative for Torres though. As good as he is 1) we can't go on always relying on him in the hope he is going to be fit for x% of the season and 2) it's good to have options as sometimes even Torres has a bad day

I know Jovanovich can operate in a few different positions but I hope he hasn't come in as a backup to Fernando.

What worries me is not that he'll be fit in 20 days, what I'd like to know is if it's the same leg and the same muscle. That's what worries me.

I must admit the thought did cross my mind as well :D although in fairness to Bav, I know feck all about him.

The fella who talked earlier on about previous manager lovers is missing the point too. It's nothing to do with that, it's simply about the new manager trying his best to make whatever funds he's got (and although none of us know how much, you can guess it ain't a fortune) stretch as far as he can. That's why I'm not too alarmed about some of the names being bandied about, the Sharners and the Beatties and the like.

The truth is we need to buy quite a few players. Not just one, but probably about five or six. Now if the manager has this mythical 15 million quid to spend, I'd rather him TBH get four frees, one for a couple of mill and one relatively big money buy. I reckon it makes more sense than buying five 3 million quidders.

The two things which link the likes of Battie and Sharner, and Figero as well come that, are the facts that they are used to the Premiership and that they are men rather than boys. If we were playing Blackburn Away in our first match (I know we're not but if we were) and it turned into a battle, I'd back all of these lads to put their foot in and be up for it.

We had a few faults last season, but one of the main ones (and it's been the case for a while to be fair) is that we are too nice. Not enough nastiness, getting stuck in, stirring it up. Too often kicked off the pitch by Everton, too often battled out of it by Wigan, and frankly when we played Chelsea towards the end of the season it almost literally was men against boys.

Most of the people being talked about probably won't sign anyway, but pretty much all of them are plenty good enough to feature in our squad. Even Cisse, who lets be honest is rubbish and I wouldn't want him back.

Hodgson on Torres talks
16th Jul 2010

Roy Hodgson today declared Fernando Torres is not for sale at any price after positive talks with the striker.

The new Liverpool boss met briefly with Torres before flying out to Switzerland to lead a pre-season training camp.

And today he has warned off potential suitors for the World Cup winner.

"I have met with Fernando. I found him to be a very pleasant man and we had a nice conversation," Hodgson told reporters in Bad Ragaz.

"As far as we are concerned he is a Liverpool player and we want him to remain a Liverpool player. He is not for sale and we don't welcome any offers for him.

"We want to keep him. My conversation with him was only short because I had to leave to come to the training camp in Switzerland. We spoke about football, the World Cup, his injury, and I told him how much I am looking forward to working with him.

"Christian Purslow was also at the meeting and chatted to Fernando for a lot longer after I left but my chat with him was only about football matters."
