Gago is shite and shouldn't be anywhere near Real Madrid. Outside of that, they've got Sneijder - a very good player IMO - but whose more in the Scholes mould, and a few other players who aren't really CMs.
Alonso would slot in there nicely, probably alongside Diarra or Sneijder depending on the strategy and formation they adopt. They're crying out for stability in the midfield which is exactly what they'd get with Alonso, and he's Spanish, just the right age, a nice bloke and all the rest of it. You can see why he's their no.1 target.
From our perspective, I wouldn't even consider an offer unless it's absolutely ridiculous i.e. £40m+ or if Xabi himself wants to leave. We're in a fantastic position, probably the strongest in over a decade to be able to overtake our rivals. Our primary objective should be to consolidate on what we have - not dismantle it, second should be to make a few minor but key adjustments - i.e. by signing Johnson, a couple of attackers, and probably another CB. Essentially, the risk of losing Alonso can't be assessed in terms of his individual ability - but in terms of his overall significance to the team and what his loss would engender. I feel we're at a critical moment in our progress which is fundamentally why I'd be loathe to see him go.
