Why not splash the cash on yakubu?

Silly money has been spent on cisse and morientes and neither could buy a goal at the min,i really think rafa should bite the bullet and spend the kitty on yakubu.Hes proved for 3 seasons that he can score goals at this level.I know that he would be expensive as Boro paid £8mil just a year ago but its gotta be worth it and i dont think that he can risk buying another striker from the continent.sorry couldnt find the appropiate thread for this but i hope people will agree with me.

I think its a good and well founded comment, The Yak is a reliable and tough goalgetter, he finds the net well and makes the best of difficult chances, Although not the most gifted of strikers his goal scoring record speaks volumes this season.

I might also add that if birmingham goes down i would mind keeping my eye on DJ campbell good player

I'm a big Yakubu fan, he's always scored goals, even a hat trick in the Champions League when he played in Israel.

On a personal level he's very much like Pennant for me. I would have dismissed him a year ago as not good enough but when a bloke just keeps doing the business over and over again sooner or later you've got to sit up and take notice. With both these players it's increasingly looking like myself and others called it wrong.
In the case of Yakubu, if he can score for Portsmouth and Middlesboro over a three season period it would seem almost a certainty that he would score regularly for a good team.

lately he has been keeping Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink out of the side a player who i admired at Leeds and Chelsea. In the same way Mick has put over ,i would never have given Yakubu a second thought last year but he keeps on scoring. To be honest any striker who will score goals i would be grateful for right now....

I liked the guy from the start, actually suggested we sign him last year, said he would be worth paying 7/8MIL for, some peoples scoffed at the suggestion, saying he is the next Heskey!

The guy has scored consistently in the Premiership over the last 3 seasons in struggling sides. He is strong, aggressive, is reasonably quick and ultimately is a goal scorer. But one thing he really does have is that nuisance value, he is so strong and aggressive that defenders get intimidated by him. Heskey was stupid, he didn’t know how to use his strength, Yakubu has the brains to make use of his natural abilities. We could really do with this sort of striker, perfect for the Premiership.

But cant see it happening now. We would have to pay 15MIL+, and despite being a good player he isn’t worth paying that much for.

Good post. Not much to disagree with. I've also taken notice of Yakubu since he was at Pompey, and had been impressed with him. You knew he would be eventually making his way up to a bigger club. However, I never thought he had the makings to play for any of the top four. I am slowly starting to come around to such a thing, though. Certianly in our case..

To be honest, though, if we were going to sign a striker with some premiership experience (Not Owen) - my preference is Bent.

I would have him, despite not starting every game for Boro the lad has about 15 league goals this season.

Those 15 goals would have moved us closer to Chelsea without a doubt.

On the subject of this fella and in the light of one or two posters bemoaning the lack of service to the strikers or wondering if our "style of play" is all wrong did anyone see Yakubu's two goals in the FA cup? I know it was against inferior opposition but the nature of the two goals made the team he was playing against less relavent than normal.
For the first the ball is bouncing loose about 30 yards out and Yakubu bursts past a cluster of players to make it his. He powers through a gap holding a couple of defenders off and then smashes it from about 25 yards into the top corner. Sort of shot that could have gone into the crowd but it didn't.
Second goal is a bog-standard (these days because they all used to be outswingers) inswinging free-kick. Tell the truth it's slightly overhit and clears the main targets. Yakubu thinks he might have a chance of getting it and arrives back post at pace, gambling the ball might come. Defender sees it coming aswell and attempts to block him off but there's only ever going to be one winner. There's only one bloke who's actually attacking it with pace and strength, like a fridge tumbling down a flight of stairs. When he gets there he does a neat little finish near post.
This guy is definately an option. The trouble is, he would now cost a kings ransom. If only we hadn't all seen the light as early as some on here (Cool Hand Luke springs to mind) and got him earlier. Can't think why I didn't spot it but there you go, unfashionable clubs and all that I guess. :(
