Our top scorers in the Premiership

92/93 I.Rush : 14 goals in 32 apps (0.438 goals/app)
93/94 I.Rush : 14 goals in 42 apps (0.333 goals/app)
94/95 R.Fowler : 25 goals in 42 apps (0.595 goals/app)
95/96 R.Fowler : 28 goals in 38 apps (0.737 goals/app)
96/97 R.Fowler : 18 goals in 32 apps (0.563 goals/app)
97/98 M.Owen : 18 goals in 36 apps (0.500 goals/app)
98/99 M.Owen : 18 goals in 30 apps (0.600 goals/app)
99/00 M.Owen : 11 goals in 27 apps (0.407 goals/app)
00/01 M.Owen : 16 goals in 28 apps (0.571 goals/app)
01/02 M.Owen : 19 goals in 29 apps (0.655 goals/app)
02/03 M.Owen : 19 goals in 35 apps (0.543 goals/app)
03/04 M.Owen : 16 goals in 29 apps (0.552 goals/app)
04/05 M.Baros : 9 goals in 26 apps (0.346 goals/app)
05/06 S.Gerrard : 10 goals in 32 apps (0.313 goals/app)
06/07 D.Kuyt : 12 goals in 34 apps (0.353 goals/app)
07/08 F.Torres : 24 goals in 33 apps (0.727 goals/app)

Looks like being Gerrard this season. Fair enough to include Rush, Fowler, Owen and Kuyt since they've been among our leading scorers in the Premiership. Premiership era it's hard to argue with Owen's record, although there are pedants out there who will go on about him not scoring 20 in a season (one more than a goal every other game, woohoo!)

The league didnt start when the prem started mate - bit unfair to ignore all the years from 81 when rush was in his prime - add them in there and you will see how bloody good rushes stats where

I hate it when people do that generally when talking about titles ect...Not to divert away from the topic but that is exactly what people are doing with this notion if the scum win next week they will be the only team to win back to back European titles.

Owen's great strengths were his pace and coolness in front of goal. When he started out nobody could match him for pace, but the hamstring injuries took their toll and now he is constantly injury prone. He was never a technical player, relying too much on his right foot and with very poor ball control. One on one with the keeper he was the best I've seen, but it's a case of what might have been with him.

Robbie had 3 years of pure genius in which he scored over 100 goals for Liverpool. In terms of technique and link up play he was way ahead of Owen. Injuries took their toll on him also, he was never very fast but he also seemed to lose the desire in the late 90's, as if everything had come too easy to him and he became lazy.

Torres has the pace Owen once had but with better technique. My big worry with him is the hamstring injuries, without that pace he will find it diffiicult to get away from players although he will still have the turn on either foot.

1. Fowler-at his best
2. Torres- with the potential to be 1
3. Owen

And a mention for Collymoore, the most complete forward I have ever seen at Liverpool, all that was missing was the right frame of mind. He had the physique, the pace, strength, two footed and decent in the air. If you could build the perfect forward Stan had it all, but not in the mind. His partnership with Fowler was amazing and his goal record ranks just behind the 3 mentioned above and King Kenny and Rush since Roger Hunt's days.

It has to be Ian Rush follwoed by King Kenny. Actually if we count Kenny in this he was the best, if we are discounting him then definately Rush. He was fantastic for us, a class above and tought Fowler all he knows / knew. Both Fowler and Owen didn't win enough for me, not there fault obviously other players around them had a deciding factor on that but they arn't as big of a legend as Rush an Kenny becuase of it IMO. Fowler has God like status and rightly so but it's a shame that Ian Rush isn't regarded as high, well he is regarded as one of the best but doesn't go down in folk law as much as Fowler does and I can't realy understand why.

Nobody can knock these stats

Can't argue with the weight of Rush's goals.  Fowler (pre bad ankle injury) was unbelievable and would have threatened the record books if he'd stayed fit and focused.  I'm afraid I'm one of the pedants who throw the 20 goal thing at Owen, albeit he'd have made it every year but for injuries.  Can't fault his strike rate though.  Like Rush, a top penalty box predator but loses brownie points for obvious reasons.  Torres as pointed out by bigmick provides more of a threat from distance (like Fowler) than Rush and Owen and is a threat in the air.  Had a great first season and has done alright this year, despite injuries.  Needs to do a hell of a lot more to top this poll, though.  Will be delighted to vote for him 3 years and 200 goals down the line as we celebrate our triple-quadruple.  The omission of Aldridge from this
list is criminal, mate.  Rarely went 2 games without scoring.

Rush, Aldridge, Hunt, Beardsley, King Kenny, Tosh, Torres

all of those above are great players.

Fowler, on the other hand, never was.

He played for the worst LFC team in the last 30 years in a time when english football sucked. England was never even close to qualifying for wc94 and english clubs were smacked in europe. Fowler never did anything in europe and was far behind players like Les Ferdinand, Ian Wright, Shearer, Sutton, Teddy Sheringham in the picking order for england.

Just making it real.
If football is banned in heaven. I'd rather go to hell.

Banana like most on here I very much disagree with you on Fowler, but you are entitled to your view.

On the question of the topic, although I've answered it as Torres, there seems to be a division between those who are taking the question as one of accumulation "he's got a long way to go yet to match so and so" nd those like me who are simply talking of who is/was the best striker. I think Torres is better now than any of his predecessors, as I don't think any of them could legitimately claim to be the best striker in the World when they were in their prime. Torres is the best striker in the World IMHO, so I think he sneaks it.

In terms of overall contribution to the club, then it's Rush. I'd be very surprised if anyone could argue with that, and he was a wonderful player in his own right. I went to see Liverpool at Highbury twenty odd years ago and it was a sh!t game, 0-0 written all over it. Rush was garbage, never got a kick as he was marshalled by a young Tony Adams. Actually, tell a lie, he did get one. It was when (I think from memory) a corner came over, there was a bit of a challenge and the ball dropped in the area. I'm presuming Rush kicked it as it bounced because it wasn't easy to see in the melee. It was kind of a blur such was his movement and sharpness, the keeper didn't move and within a fraction of a second of the ball hitting the deck, it hit the back of their net at under North Bank. Rush wheeled away, Dalglish did that p!ssing himself laughing thing which he always did when we scored and we won 1-0.

Yes apologies to Rush on reflection, he did get the one kick. That was all it needed with him, fantastic striker.

You may jest at Dirk Kuyt, but in terms of a striker thats scored the most valuble goal, his in the last minute of the CL final qualifier against Liege must of earned the club millions.
From Shankly to Brendan we follow our team, Rome to Istanbul we've all lived the dream. Our journey is long, our goal stays the same, to keep for our children the famous red name.
