Good point Zara.

I suppose some managers could move into director of football or technical roles and pass on their knowledge to younger people, but strangely it hasn't really worked that well in England.

.. I suppose part of the problem is that the "technical Director" posts have caused conflict.. whose managing? whose advising?.. whose directing?.. If Alan Shearer had begun his "apprenticeship" to succeed Robson .. 18 mths ago.. he may have been manager now..

.. Kenny Dalglish is perhaps the best example of succession planning...

Too true Zara.

Its significant that Craig Levein, the new Leicester manager, asked for old womble head Dave Bassett to be given the boot.

I see George Best is going to be an "ambassador" for Portsmouth, whatever the hell that means.

Italian great Trappatoni just lead Benfica to their first Portoguese title this season at the grand old age of 66.

I think Trappatoni has something like 9 or 10 championships as a manager now, an amazing 6 with Juventus, which puts him in the Bob Paisley league.

Also great to see Benfica back in the Champions League. They were a major force in Europe for much of the 1960s, and they really are sleeping giants.

Trappatoni has now left Benfica, their fans must be devastated that was their first title in about 10 years i think.

I notice Trapp hasn't got a job back in Itlay yet.

I read on the teletext yesterday evening that Bobby Robson wants a swift return to football next season. He's 72 now!
