Both teams adopted it as their anthem around the time when Gerry & The Pacemakers had a big hit with it in the 60's but Liverpool adopted it with far more flair and vigour cos Gerry's a scouser

It's only recently that those dirtbags Celtic have really taken to it with any vigour, bunch of thieving w*nkers. I think they believe they have some kind of right to sing it cos Liverpool and Glasgow both have huge Irish populations but it's bollox. YNWA is our anthem and the sooner they go and find one of their own the better

i thought john barnes and kenny introduced it to celtic`s pre match festivities when they had a management stint at parkhead.
i wouldnt know if they used it in the 60`s but to my knowledge its not a traditional celtic song.
fields of athenrye is their anthem.
