Lyon are keeping tabs on Spanish striker Fernando Morientes with a view to a surprise summer swoop

Morientes chose Liverpool ahead of a move to Lyon when he left Real Madrid during the transfer window but has struggled to adapt to life in the Premiership, scoring twice in eleven games.

The French champions are keen to continue their excellent recent progress and adviser Bernard Lacombe told the French press: "If we ever lose Michael Essien, Juninho or Mahamadou Diarra, we need to find great players to replace them.

"We will take stock in June. We are following Morientes very closely.

"He is a player who did feats with Monaco. With Ludovic Giuly and Jerome Rothen on the wings, he was fed with a lot of great balls.

"At Liverpool he is less outstanding because it is not at all the same context."

Lyon still want Morientes

French champions Lyon are still on the trail of Liverpool striker Fernando Morientes.

The Spain international joined The Reds in a £6 million switch from Real Madrid during the January transfer window.
He was also wanted by Lyon, who were impressed by Morientes' scoring ratio during his loan at Monaco in the 2003/04 season.
Since moving to Anfield, Morientes has scored just twice in 11 appearances and appears to be short of match sharpness.
Lyon are desperate to bring in a proven goalscorer in the summer and remain sweet on Morientes, particularly if they lose one of their key players.
"If we ever lose Michael Essien, Juninho or Mahamadou Diarra, we need to find great players to replace them," Lyon adviser Bernard Lacombe told But!
"I really hope that we will keep our great players because they have adapted to Lyon.
"We really want to keep them but you can never say never.
"It is obvious that Lyon need a guy that scores very often. Sonny Anderson gave us our first title with 23 goals.
"At Milan there is Shevchenko, Ronaldo at Madrid and Drogba at Chelsea. We don't have that kind of striker.
"We will take stock in June. We are following Morientes very closely.
"He is a player who did feats with Monaco. With Ludovic Giuly and Jerome Rothen on the wings, he was fed with a lot of great balls.
"At Liverpool he is less outstanding because it is not at all the same context."

morientes is going to be huge for us.  Ok, his return so far hasn't been amazing but the three live games I've watched him in, he's been a class act.  Next season he'll get 25 in all comps. pity he's missed out on the cl fun but he knows he's at a club that are on the up.  Plus we pay him big wages.  Plus he's a guy who will want to prove himself in the EPL.  Plus Lyon can f**k off.

... and wait till Xabi starts pinging in a few decent passes to him.  The fans love him.  Don't worry.

He's not a goalscorer. But he can finish if given a chance. He'll probably get about 15 goals next season i would think but he'll probably be involved in some way or another in most of them. The mans a class act.

Morientes will turn out to be a great signing for us.  He hardly played for the first half of the season at real so lacked a bit of sharpness when he joined us plus he has had a couple of niggling injuries

No chance he's leaving in the summer

There's nothing in that story.

Lyon are a bit miffed as Morientes turned them down last summer and also in January.

No need to get uptight! :p  BTW - if Mori leaves to join Lyon, then it'll only be for double what we paid!!!! Also, why would he leave LFC to join some nancy outfit in froggy-land? Up the 'pool!
