Liverpool scouts - At african cup of nations ?

Do we have any scouts at the African cup of Nations ?

I have just watched an absolute crackin' match between Egypt and the Democratic Rep of Congo and some of the skill on display had me on the edge of my seat.

I still have memories of the performances of Diouff and Diao in the last world cup and their performances after their subsequent signing by us has perhaps left LFC more than cautious when it comes to signing African players . Should that experience prevent us from continuing to scout for african talent ? . (if indeed we aren't) .

I was thinking the same today myself Woof!!

I aint seen much of the competition as i've been busy, but from the little i have seen there looks to be some hugely talented unheard of players..Some of the football and goals have been amazing!

I also noticed the tempo that most of these teams play at and its pretty damn fast!!
Id say theres a few out there that are tailor made for the EPL !

Lets hope Raffa has someone out there,i'd say most clubs do mate!! :nod

To my shame I'm not familiar with the names of 99.9% of the players in the competition but there was one little player for the Congo today at RM who made a run at goal that was a carbon copy of Archie Gemmils run and goal against Holland in the WC all those years ago and the player is apparently with some 2nd div swiss side !
I certainly hope we have scouts out there . At a time when clubs are desperate for talent at an affordable price the Nations Cup looks odds on to supply some real bargains .

You obviously havent seen some of the players on display fella!!
Just because Diouf and Diao did,nt cut it that does not mean that we should not look for talent in Africa or does it in your head??

There are some very very talented unheard of players over there that we could pick up on the cheap...so why not ??

this reminds me of an artcile i read ages ago either on the bbc or guardian website about the plight of brazilian footballers becuase of the rush to find the next big one and hope hundreds come to europe just to slip into obscurity.  i think we learned our lesson after diao and diouf, although this was houlliers faults for not tracking them properly and researching them

Your first point makes absolute sense , your second point however suggests that because Diouff and Diao proved to be so disappointing you would prefer that we dismissed the opportunity to be first in on potential Droghba's, Eto's and Papa Diop's . That to me doesn't make sense .

So we should give up then because other teams would want them???

Maybe they would wanna play along side the heros of Istanbul..before any of the others??

You not reckon mate??

That very point struck me today Barry . 87 mins gone and the Congo players were still bombing round at a 100mph . Even our own "can run all night" Sissoko would have struggled to keep up .

Jeezuz , you're a real bucket of positive energy . You don't have to agree but for kerists sake show some enthusiasm over our ability to sign a player here and there .  :D

As for learning our lessons over Diouff and Diao , well Nunez and Josemi failed to make the grade , should we get rid of our other spanish players while we can  ? after all they may just be going through a decent run of form and don't really have what it takes .  :p

i understand your point but i feel that signing players just on their international performances can prehaps give you unreal expectations as that is there shop window, a chance for them to get out of their aids invested country and earn some money

International competitions, and the African Nations in particular, should be taken with a pinch of salt IMHO.

True, they can be interesting for a scout, but I wouldn't buy a player from what I saw in a tournament alone. The best way is to have him watched over the course of a season or two in domestic football.
