Sad news this afternoon. Lifelong Liverpool fan John Peel has died from a heart attack at age 65, while on holiday in Peru.

I grew up listening to his show on the radio.He probably influenced my taste in music more than anyone.He`ll be missed.

Just heard it on the radio and I'm genuinely saddened. He was the coolest guy ever to grace radio1 and also of course a lifelong Reds fan.

I doubt there's anyone on this forum who hasn't been touched at some time by the music he has pioneered, from rock, to punk, to indie, to hip hop.

He was one of the most humble and likeable people ever to have graced the airwaves and was responsible for starting the careers of acts such as The Smiths, T Rex, David Bowie, The Undertones, White Stripes, Pulp, you name it - the list goes on. A true gentleman, he was universally liked and respected. For us on the forum it means that little bit more cos he was a Merseysider and lifelong proud Reds fan.

I'm gutted.

Even over here, Peel was a one-off - a totally different breed from the DJ's who swamp the airwaves from Canada to Cambodia. He was the only broadcaster still with Radio1 from the original line-up when Radio1 launched in 1967, says it all really - after 37 years he was still the man.

Strange fact about John Peel.He started his career working in Dallas in the sixties before John F Kennedy was killed.The BBC sent him to cover the story,and he actually appears in the famous picture of Lee Harvey Oswald getting shot by Jack Ruby.I only found that out tonight,what a life he had.
