I know it has not happened under Rafa, not many clubs work that way.
This thread has provoked alot of reaction due to the statement but imo its pointless, Rafa would love Joaquin at Anfield and he is just doing his usual denying act that he does when asked about any player.

Rafa admitted he was trying to get Crouch in the Summer  :;):

Well you got me on that one...and i am in big trouble regarding my memory  :p
But maybe he sees is as a mistake publicly stating he wanted him because the price ended up at 7 million when it probably should of been about 5.

IMO i don't think liverpool will get joaquin. although i would love to see him in anfield because he is an amazing player i don't think benitez will pay more than 12m for him which is unlikely because betis would want 25m unless something happens which we could get him cheaply  :D

i think liverpool's top target this january is simao and i have a feeling we will get him. when i watched the game man u vs. benfica i was amazed with simao's pace, techniques and crosses!!! he is a brilliant footballer and he can solve our problems in the right hand side and would make crouch even more happier!! :D

he will probably end up at barca or the galaticos of madrid this is probably a ploy by his agent to alert those two clubs for when he will be obviously for sale  after the world cup

For one Chelsea would offer 50 million for him if he said he was available, and for two Rafa said we dont want a striker we have 6 good ones here, which he lied about cause he did want MO, and we only have 5 strikers.
There is no-one anywhere in the world at any stage who is any bigger or any better than this football club.

he did want MO because the board wanted him to get him and the fans too. he was convinced to get him but failed because he didn't have the money

He admit interest to crouch in this summer because no contestants for him on crouch then we can grab crouch easily.

i doubt if simao will sign. we were clsoe to signing him and he pulled out when he heard about the fans reaction to his possible sale. why use that as an excuse if your going to risk the wrath of those same fans a couple of months later ? similar to the same situation stevie g was in and look what happened there.

but this isn't the same case as gerrard because it was gerrard's decision to stay... as for simao it doesn't matter for him because as he said an offer from the european champions is too good and enormous that he will join but Gerrard wanted to stay because he wants to stay.

this joaquin,  however good he is and none of us can say for definate he'd be anymore efficient in the prem' than simao would.. i just hope after this very obvious ricochet from rafa we dont go down the 'owen' road again..i.e the bluff did not work too well, and playing your cards very firmly out of view might be the way of the wise man, but in this day and age its been 'proven' to be the  fastest monkey who steals the spoils first. however much of a glutten he or they are.  ???

at present we seem one dimensional in our progress on the park. in respect that, already its the crouch ball or little else on offer ,lose it/cut out ball that flavour of the month. would adding joaquin/simao to the fray make us any more effective,if we then play the ball out wide to one of them every time theres a break out?  hell, yes! of course it would. or it should be doing..until they all get 'wise' to the expensive experiment. and for me the way rafa has been performing in the league, i just dont think he can be the type of manager who lavishes out 20-30 million on one option, for it to turn sour..or at least he's probably more aware of the cost of failure, to let himself the luxury of finding out the hard way, lets say. question is, does rafa benitez actually believe that joaquin, even at such a high price, comes without ANY doubts over his ability to 'hit the ground running' and strike gold in this league?  because he would be expected to. by who? the media? yes. but also us the supporters.

but not at the expense of other 'critical' areas of the team. where we are so glaringly understrength.

im all for either of those two,and if pushed i will prefer joaquin. why? because unlike simao (apparently any way)? joaquin has the physical stature. whether either/or is a better footballer, or a better bet in the prem' then time and rafa's choices alone will tell.. he is right to 'play the fool' but not at the price of being "once bitten twice shy"
its about time we as a club become a little more assertive in the market, but certainly not misguidedly. it has to be right.

Simao didn't pull out of the deal, Benfica did. You know the club that he's under contract with. He was set to sign, he passed the medical in Liverpool but on his way back to Portugal, Benfica called it off.

I don't think that Benitez is bluffing, Simao is the target which was confirmed by Rick Parry[spelling] recently.
