Definitely agree it's best for us if Gerrard doesn't get the England job.  Too many off the field responsibilities come with it in addition to playing in all the friendlies.  I'd rather he concentrated on captaining us.

As far as other reds/ex-reds to be International captains, Paul Ince is one who hasn't been mentioned - he's done it for England a number of times while he played for us.  I'm sure Gary Mac captained Scotland a few times also, although not when he was with us.  Staunton has definitely captained Ireland too.  Surely Rush also captained Wales towards the end of his career also?

Thanks John.... We meandered off the topic a little with the discussions aorund Gerrard and the England captaincy....

meant to discuss how many REAL country captains LFC have ever produced..... not just in one-off matches....

I've googled this and I think you'd be pretty surprised how few REDs have actually captained England....

- Crazy Horse has done it 23 times.
- Keegan's done it 31 times
- Thommo's done 6
- Ince's got 7 (but personally I never really considered him a true red as the Mancs had him 1st)
- Owen's got 8
- Clemence, Beardsley, Neal, Stevie and couple of blokes from the 20s (Ephraim Longworth and Thomas Lucas) - once

I find it a interesting that the greatest club in English history has only ever produced so few English skippers....

Bleeding Mancs had RObson do the job 65 times (3rd on the list) and that Tw@t Beckham's done it 58 times (4th on the list)

The powers that be don't seem to be too fond of us do they ???

Maybe I'll google up Scotland, Ireland and Wales to see how we've done with them at a later post.....

Personally don't want Gerrard to get the captaincy.  He's got enough on his plate with Liverpool and, as great a footballer as he is, I think Stevie's a touch sensitive and thin-skinned.  Can you imagine what the London press would do to him when England fail to play well?  The knives would be out and he'd carry that added pressure around on his shoulders.  Let Terry be captain, I say.

i always think stevie is the right person to bcome england captain. and you guys can't be that egois not supporting him to get that role just bcoz you afraid that he'll get too much responsibility. he loves his country, and there's no way he reject the duty if mclaren appointed him...
and this will prove to the whole world that he is above frankie lampie..:)

and btw, is there any problem between them? coz i can see in the last WC they didn't really get along...

ConnOvar.... Crazy Horse is THE man when it comes to Reds with the armband... Kevin did captain the 3 Lions 31 times but relatively few times when he was with us. most of them were in his SV Hamburg & Southampton days.
On and On Emlyn... RIP

What matters more is that we have 5 European Cups and 18 League Titles. The Mancs, Chelsea, Arsenal etc don't.   :nod

Gerrard of course, because as captain he will have a say and will get to put himself in the position where he is at his best, running at defenders rather than mopping up the mess Backham, Lampard and Cole make becuase none of them can tackle.
