Now as the rumour mill is going into overdrive with the talk of Aimar, Morientes and Anelka, does anyone know of any suggestion that we may be looking to strengthen our defence?
At the beginning of the season there was much talk of a Central Defender coming in Ayla and Collocini to mention two!
But recently I have heard nothing to make me think that we will be trying to make our defence stronger!
Personally I find this a little worrying as cover for the CD position is thin plus the fact I feel Sami is becoming less of a key player in the backbone of our team! Carra has definitely taken the No.1 spot as a defender now and I feel it’s probably time that an ideal partner was found for him!
Sami has been a favourite player of mine for a long time so it’s with some trepidation that I now feel he has become a weak link for us. So maybe a trip to the bench as cover and mentor for our youngsters is role that he could now assume! Our defensive record is the 5th best in the league so its by no means shambolic but its not as good as it could be (again purely a personal opinion). Though we could say that we have the 3rd best goals for record in the league, yet I hear very few people saying we don’t need another striker!
The main reason I have put this post up is because I would like to know other peoples views on how our defence is performing whether people feel it can be improved and if so how and with which personnel!
I would like to see a more mobile and confident player come in there are many players that can be listed as part of a wish list, but many on that list would probably not be remotely possible due to little funds! Ledley King I feel would forge an impressive partnership but this is something that I can purely dream of due to a little cash pot! Young Whitbread seams a very encouraging prospect and could well make the step up in the future!
So its over to you guys what do you feel on this subject

good post i've been thinkin about this for a long time, a while back i heard a rumour saying that we might renew our interest in collocini but nothing has happened.

I reckon a LB is what we should be looking for,Risse is better up the pitch and while Jimme has improved im still a bit nervous when teams attack down that left side. :oops:

i think that right now our first choice back 4 - finnan, hyppia, JG and riise - are pretty good. but we really lack cover. a few people have said the young defenders coming thru are really promising which is great news but its gonna take a couple of seasons to get em right. i deffo think we need quality cover in the defence for now rather than replacements. getting the pellegrino fella in on a free looks like a good move - though none of seem to know if he's a good player, admittedly.

i've expressed doubts before about overloading the side with strikers. i really don't think we need morientes AND anelka because i'm sure that cisse will be back and performing next season. and also, as good as i think hamman is, he's also not gonna go on forever and we need to start looking for his understudy.

Choice full backs would be Finnan and Risse but they have good cover in Josemi and Traore!

May be we wont get any strikers coming in as its only speculation in the press,we may be surprised with what Rafa comes up with. :Oo:

i have to say that our defence has been looking a lot more solid in recent weeks but the big tests will come in the upcoming games against chelsea and manure. we have certainly come a long way from the start of the season when we inexplicably reverted to a zonal marking system and consequently looked like we were going to concede a goal from every set play.

towards the beginning of the season i was also concerned about finnan and riise's natural instincts to get forward and forget about defending. i then witnessed riise mark wright-phillips out the game against man city which told me he had turned the corner. carra has been outstanding and hyypia is still a great defender despite their combined lack of pace. in the future i still think a young quick centre half will be a priority.

I think we need a solid defender come next week in the Transfer Market other than that our back four aren't as horrible as we all thought, just look at the statistics below:

Ledley King & Carra will be a great combination. If we win the champions league, maybe ledley will join us next season

. Would not be too upset with upson coming over too.

If all else fails, then we can promote from the reseves.
