Breaking news - Gerrard to miss start of season

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard is expected to be out until September because of a groin problem.
Gerrard, 31, began a course of antibiotic treatment for an infection on Saturday and is expected to remain in hospital for several days.
Groin surgery ended Gerrard's season in March but he had expected to be back for the start of the new campaign.
The midfielder could also miss England's two Euro 2012 qualifiers against Bulgaria and Wales.
Gerrard missed his side's pre-season tour of Asia this month in order to try to regain full fitness for the start of the new season on 13 August, when Liverpool play Sunderland at Anfield.
He will also miss Liverpool's Premier League fixtures against Arsenal and Bolton, with the trip to Stoke on 10 September a likely target for his return.
Gerrard was already set to miss the international friendly with the Netherlands on 10 August but will now also be a doubt for England's competitive fixtures away to Bulgaria on 2 September and at home to Wales four days later.
Gerrard has been plagued by the problem for several years now and it restricted his effectiveness in the last campaign.

:( .

Got mixed feelings on this.

We all want a fit Gerrard starting for us but I'm actually happy he'll be missing some England duty.
Hopefully it'll give him more time to think about the fact that knocking international footy on the head may not only extend but possibly save whats left of his footballing career.

Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard suffers groin infection and will be sidelined until September

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has been ruled out until September after being admitted to hospital with an infection related to his troublesome groin injury.

30 Jul 2011

Gerrard has been undergoing rehabilitation from groin surgery that ended his season in mid-March, but Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish had expected him to be back for the start of the new campaign.

However, a statement on the club's website today revealed he will not be available until the following month.

"Steven Gerrard today began a course of antibiotic treatment for an infection related to an ongoing groin problem," it said.

The club statement continued: "He is expected to remain in hospital for several days while the precautionary procedure is completed.

"The player will then return to Melwood to continue his rehabilitation programme and is expected to be available for selection in September."

The England midfielder, who sat out the club's brief tour of the Far East this summer, will therefore miss Liverpool's Premier League fixtures against Sunderland, Arsenal and Bolton, with the trip to Stoke on Sept 10 a likely target for his return.

Gerrard was already set to miss the international friendly with Holland on Aug 10 but will now also be a doubt for England's Euro 2012 qualifiers away to Bulgaria on Sept 2 and home to Wales four days later.

What sort of infection? Related to the groin?

He should really consider quitting England, he isn't getting any younger and its the best for him and for us  to focus on the club

I agree but aquilani's agent is a media whore, he is saying a lot of things publically and one of them that Kenny and Comolli don't see him as part of their plans

it just doesn't make sense for him to get the infection three months after he had the operation. surely it would have got infected a few days after?

I gotta say and it's not the first time i'm saying it i realy doubt the medical/Physic team working for Liverpool...Too many injuries ,too many incidents of players not recovering as expected ...Something Stinks...Yep might be a crazy conspiracy theory but i really think our players are not in good medical hands...Either their training isn't adjusted ,or their recovery plan is wrong or treatment is bad..who knows? Bottom line..Players are dropping and having a very difficult time returning to normal.

something doesn't seem right.maybe the rumours about his injury being worse than initially admitted are true. Maybe thats why we bought so many midfielders
