An old mate of mine from Liverpool tough old boot but you should see him listening to his Shankly interviews on tape.

Told me a story once that a kid in his street was being courted by Liverpool and Shanks came to visit his parents and he joined in with the kids having a kickabout in the street

My old man was in a boxing team and in a tournament in Liverpool they went to Anfield to meet Shankly who was a huge boxing fan and although dad is no football fan it was after that he decided to bring me up to support Liverpool.

Anyway some quotes

The Kops exclusive, and institution, and if youre a member of the kop you feel youre a member of a society youve got thousands of friends around you and theyre united and loyal

This record sums up our spirit on the field. No player in my team battles alone Theres always someone there to help him (YNWA)

I was the best manager in Britain because I was never devious or cheated anyone. I'd break my wifes legs if I played against her but Id never cheat her

He's just stepped out of the shower. Come in and see him have a walk around him. He's a colossus (introducing Ron Yeats to journalists)

I want to build a team thats invincible so theyll have to send a team from Mars to beat us

Good shout Supersub sometimes people forget that this is mainly a forum for Football and fans who have a deep passion for the game
Shankly was the inspiration behind most fans profound love for their team and the memories the Great man inspired with his undoubted  love for Liverpool Football Club .

I for one will never forget the man he laid the foundations for our eventual footballing supremacy and is an essential part of our illustrious past .

I made them play in red and we looked like giants ! (Genius )

His vision for the club was awesome... so is his legacy.. Liverpool became the "bastian of invisibility" he wanted, thanks to his guile and forsight... and his quotes and sayings remain inspiring and unrivalled today... Liverpool are reveered today thanks to him... RIP   :)

Great man and manager, he has done great things for this club. Had a good sense of humour as well. May he rest in peace.

I love that man, he has a special place in my heart, I've never met a person who has a bad word to say about him :)

It p1553s me off the way Fergie has a nighthood but previous footballing greats like Shanks never got that honour :(

If I could meet one man who has passed on then Shanks would be my choice

R.I.P Bill Shankly

23 years ago yesterday. I know some older fans say they can remember where they were and what they were doing when Kennedy died - I can't - but all these years later I bet many could point to the exact spot where they were when they heard the news that Bill had died.

Sure, he'd been ill all week, but he'd get over it wouldn't he? Heart trouble? Shanks? No way. Superfit (even for his age), doesn't drink, doesn't smoke, led a clean life. Unthinkable.

You sometimes read about "a hammer blow", well that's what it was like, just as if you'd been struck.  Stunned.  Sick.

St Mary's Church, West Derby. John Toshack, Ron Yeats, Emlyn Hughes and Ray Clemence carried him. Kevin Keegan, Ian Callaghan and Ian St John escorted the coffin.  The quiet dignity of Nessie and her daughters and grandchildren. Hundreds of people and a river of tears.

Shanks was finally laid to rest when his ashes were scattered in the Kop end goal.

RIP Shanks. YNWA.
