A season on the brink - Anyone read it?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Sorry but i really didnt know where this topic should be and if its been done before but just wanted to know if anyone had read this book? For those who havent i highly recommend that you go out and get it. It gives a great account of Rafa's last days with Valencia, with all the boardroom unrest, and Parry and Moore's moves to make him the new manager.  The goings on over Stevie's proposed switch to Chelsea and the build up to the final in Istanbul. I enjoyed all the goings on in the half time dressing room with Djimi Traore's claims that the Milan players were already celebrating at half time when nobody else heard a thing. The half time speech by Benitez was outstanding and he shows how much the club means to him. Go buy it.

Best football book I have ever read.
You don't appreciate a lot of stuff in school until you get older.

The half time team talk which Rafa says he cant remember word for word but went something like this...

Dont let your heads drop
All the players who go on the pitch after half-time have to keep their heads held high
We are Liverpool, you are playing for Liverpool
Do not forget that
You have to hold your heads up high for the supporters
You have to do it for them
You cannot call yourselves Liverpool players if you have your heads down
If we create a few chances we have the possibilty of getting back into this
Believe you can do it and you will
Give yourself the chance to be heroes

That makes me wanna get out and play for Liverpool. I remember an interview on .tv where he said he didn't say anything really special. Thats pretty good right there.

Haven't read this one but will have to get a copy. I read Paco Loret's 'Rafa Benitiez' biography last month and that was a good read although much of the focus is understandably on his time at Valencia.

I've got this book, I've read it twice.

It's also autographed by the author Ballague

That's a link to a topic I started he day I bought the book.  How lucky was I?

Went to Thailand last year and the flight took eighteen hours.  I bought that book for the plane journey and I read it in two hours straight.  Good book, gives a good insight into his Valencia days.

Best manager in the World, no comparison, one of these days, someone might just acknowledge it.

At the moment, Scolari, Rijkaard, Mourinho are getting all the plaudits.  Doesn't Wenger and Ferguson seem so 90's?

Have you noticed Benitez doesn't court publicity or compliments, yet has achieved exactly the same if not more in prestigious trophies?

But he doesn't look for the publicity.  It makes him even more dignified in my opinion and that's why he's the greatest manager in the game of football as we speak.

Can't wait to see what tricks he pulls this summer.  Roll on next season.

Yeah, I read it at Christmas. It was 'unputdownable' - much to the annoyance of my girlfriend :)
