LONDON (Reuters) – Gamers beware: Keeping too tight a grip on the console and furiously pushing the buttons can cause a newly identified skin disorder marked by painful lumps on the palms, Swiss scientists said Tuesday.

Called "PlayStation palmar hidradentitis" by the scientists, the skin disorder can cause painful lesions on the palms similar to patches found on the soles of children's feet after taking part in heavy physical activity, they said.

"The tight and continuous grasping of the hand-grips together with repeated pushing of the buttons produce minor but continuous trauma to the (palm) surfaces," Vincent Piguet and colleagues at University Hospitals and Medical School of Geneva reported in the British Journal of Dermatology.
A spokesman for Sony Corp, which makes the PlayStation, noted the study involved one person and said the company had sold hundreds of millions of the consoles since the product was introduced in 1995.

"As with any leisure pursuit there are possible consequences of not following common sense, health advice and guidelines, as can be found within our instruction manuals," Sony spokesman David Wilson said.

"We would not wish to belittle this research and we will study the findings with interest, but this is the first time we have ever heard of a complaint of this nature."

Excessive gaming is already seen as a public health issue, sparking addictive behavior that can lead to a range of psychological problems, the researchers said.

Other researchers have identified acute tendonitis from playing too much of Nintendo Co Ltd's Wii, and now a disorder related to the PlayStation can be added to the list, the team said.

Their study described the case of a 12-year-old girl who attended the Geneva hospital with intensely painful lesions on her hands, which she had developed four weeks earlier. She had no other lesions anywhere else on her body.

After questioning, the doctors discovered that several days prior to the appearance of the lesions the girl had started to play a game on her PlayStation for several hours each day.
The researchers suspected that grasping the console's hand-grips together with repeated pushing of the buttons produced minor but prolonged injury to the palm of the girl's hands, which can be made worse by sweating during a tense game.
The doctors recommended the girl stop playing and she recovered fully after 10 days, the researchers said.

"If you're worried about soreness on your hands when playing a games console, it might be sensible to give your hands a break from time to time, and don't play excessively if your hands are prone to sweating," Nina Goad of the British Association of Dermatologists said in a statement.

I saw Dead Space for £19.99 in Morrisson's yesterday, as well as Far Cry 2 for the same price. Cracking value for two amazing games.

That's not a glitch brother, you've got malaria in the game and sprinting makes your vision blurred.

Bought a PS3 last week and am absolutely loving it.

Its multimedia features are fantastic, such as its photo studio and all sorts of movie playback, and its Home function is hugely impressive.

I still plan on buying most games for my 360, but the PS3 has some seriously good exlcusives: I rate MGS4 and Killzone 2 to be easily as good as anything on the 360.

Oh, and I got Halo Wars as a present over the weekened. I've always loved RTS games and while Halo Wars isn't complicated or sophisticated like RTS games on PC, its a seriously good blast.

recently got a PS3   my online name is JMG1868  i only have FIFA and a college basketball game (which is :censored:)  sometimes I play online  but what I like doing is starting up a manager mode Livrpool team and straight away selling everybody over 21 years old then using the cash to buy the best coaches and stadiums and playing all our youngsters and getting them really good. It makes the first couple seasons a bit challenging because the team is about as good as the relegation sides but I manage to win the league anyway, maybe I should try a harder difficulty, but I really want the young players to score as many goals as I can get them so they improve

The PS3 would require a price cut and about 5 more quality exclusive games before I'd consider touching one. If it weren't for the disgraceful red lights on the 360, I probably just wouldn't even think about touching one, but there you are.

God Of War 3 looks brilliant, though, even though I've not played the other two, but still looks interesting. Played the demo of Killzone 2, and while it does look very impressive (though nowhere near as good as it's made out. Far Cry 2 is almost on par with it) for me, it just another generic FPS, although a very good one at that. My gripe would be with the controls. They seem very labored  to me. Still very nice technically. I expect COD:MW2 to put an end to the  ridiculous claims its been getting of best looking game ever, which it's not. Once that comes out on all formats it should squash those "opinions" if what IW say is true about them squeezing a lot more out of the engine.

Hmm! No.

PES is now officially bollox. Though if you really want a different experience, play PES 6 on a PS2 and be reminded of just how good it used to be, though it may still feel dated. Time for another company to have a crack at the football sim other than Konami and EA.

Playing Killzone 2 and MGS4 at the moment.

Killzone is amazing: in a similar enough vein to Gears of War except with COD4 type gameplay. Its easily the most graphically impressive game on any console but its let down considerably by awkward controls.

As for MGS4, well, thats a tour de force.

Killzone 2 looks fantastic, I'd love to have a proper gander at it, fingers crossed the PS3 starts getting more quality games now and in the next 6-12 months has enough to justify paying the £300 to get one.

The main issue I have with the PS3 is the controller, I HATE it, the triggers are horrid, your fingers slide off them and the analogue sticks are possitioned badly  :no

I need a bit of techy help. I've just moved to Canada. I read on another forum that my UK XBox should still work over here if I bought a new power brick - the UK ones require more voltage. I bought a US power brick off ebay prior to leaving. I tried to set it up today, but I got the dreaded red rings. Does anyone know if the rings will be because my XBox just won't funtion correctly over here, or that it is just fucked? Also, will microsoft honour my 3 year warranty now I have moved countries?

No idea Neil, but  I assume you fixed the problem because I think I saw you sign in just now.

I'm finally ranked in FIFA 09, sure the number is (9,600 something) but finally :D
