Hey Kopboyau, its almost like the whole Schapelle mess in Indonesia. The same kind of despair must be prevalent for his family.
You'll never walk alone.

I have lifted this from another site Iam sure the author wont mind.

Roadender:
I am making an appeal on behalf of my cousin's son and his family, and hope somebody somewhere can help.

As many of you may have read in the Echo, eighteen year old Liverpool fan Michael Shields is being held in police custody in Bulgaria, accused of a violent crime he did not commit. This incident occurred in Golden Sands on the 30th May 2005, while Michael was enjoying the remainder of his holiday after the match, like so many other of his fellow reds.
The Bulgarian police refuse to consider releasing Michael until they have found the real culprit of this crime - which, according to the laws of their country, is entirely legal: they can hold a suspect for up to two months without making any formal charge and as is the case at the moment, without any proof of culpability.
We are appealing for anyone out there who can help in seeing justice done. Michael's family are totally devastated and just want their innocent son back home. A trip to see his beloved Liverpool Football Club has totally destroyed this young man's life. Please, if you can, come forward and help.
Any information you can give will be gratefully received by Michael's family, who can be contacted either by telephone on 07939 951 583 (Laura or Sylvia), or by email: freemichaelshields@hotmail.co.uk

Thanks
Tony

Shields trial starts Jul 21 2005

'He stood over the fallen victim and he threw the stone down at his head ...' - The prosecution today as Michael Shields's trial starts in Bulgaria

From Bojan Pancevski in Varna, Bulgaria, Liverpool Echo

THIS is the moment today Liverpool FC fan Michael Shields arrived in a Bulgarian court to be tried for a savage attack that could see him jailed for 20 years.

Today prosecutor Atanas Shkodrov opened the trial by alleging the 18-year-old raised a stone slab in the air with both hands, and then smashed it down with such force on waiter Martin Georgiev that it left a three-inch hole in his skull.

Shields, of Watertree, and co-accused Reds fan Anthony James Wilson, 19, of Edge Hill, are appearing before a court at the Black Sea port of Varna after the attack on May 30 as Reds fans celebrated after Liverpool's European Cup victory.

Shields has always maintained his innocence, and a huge campaign is being fought on his behalf by friends and family in Liverpool.

He says he can prove he was asleep in his hotel room at the time the waiter was attacked and is a victim of mistaken identity.

Mr Shkodrov told the court Mr Georgiev was attacked after asking a group of Reds fans to quieten down, and had a stone slab thrown onto his head. It broke his skull, leaving his brain exposed.

His eight-months-pregnant wife was so shocked when told of his injuries that she went into labour.

Shields and Wilson face between 15 and 20 years in prison after being charged over the attack in the Golden Sands holiday resort.

Lets hope this lad gets a fair trial and is home with his family soon.

Apparently there are people who know the id of the person who really committed this crime . They should step up .Perhaps they're thinking Michael Shields will be found innocent and therefore the real perpetrator will get away with not having to pay for this barbaric assault. Would they feel the same if it was their father , brother ,son who'd had his head smashed in .

Total disgrace.

Liverpool fan Michael Shields has been jailed for 15 years for the attempted murder of a Bulgarian barman.

The 18-year-old was convicted of throwing a brick at the head of barman Martin Georgiev, 25, during a fracas at a takeaway in Varna on May 30.

Shields was holidaying in the Black Sea resort after watching Liverpool win the Champions League final in Turkey.

Shields was arrested several hours after the attack but has always denied playing any part in it, insisting he was asleep in his hotel room at the time.

When his trial began last weekend another Liverpool fan, 20-year-old electrician Graham Sankey, appeared to admit responsibility for the attack.

However, the Bulgarian court rejected Sankey's confession and proceeded with the trial.

Shields' family plans to appeal but will require Sankey to make a confession that is acceptable to the Bulgarians.

His previous confession, made to a Merseyside-based solicitor, was not considered as legally admissible evidence.

Another Liverpool fan, 19-year-old Anthony Wilson, was cleared of hooliganism and convicted of possession of cannabis.

He was sentenced to two-and-a-half years imprisonment but the sentence was suspended, meaning he can return to the UK.
