LOST THEORY POST - DON'T READ UNLESS YOU WANT TO!!!
Since I've taken the time to publish these points, please don't just dismiss it out of hand as 'discredited' or 'sci-fi'. If you wish to criticise then give a RATIONAL REFUTATION for any of the points. If you take the time and trouble to read and understand then please feel free. Also I would welcome any questions which may put the theory in doubt, or any loose ends that the theory does not address.
Clues In Episode 1 of Season 3.
01 The Displacement Effect
----------------------------------
The creators of the show love displacing the audience. I think the introduction was to get us to think that we are watching a typical flashback (it is indeed a flashback but from Juliet's POV) in the real world. Then they turn it around, we think we're in some normal town in America but it's actually on the island, yay! This is just a clever setup to get us to think that the island is still in the present. Imagine at the end of the season (or the next seasons) when the big displacement is that...not only are they lost on an island but they're lost IN THE FUTURE...gasp.
02 Not So Primitive
------------------------
The subtle point of the season 3 intro was to show that THE OTHERS aren't animals, and aren't primitive but part of a completely self-sufficient townlike community. Even with their own nice little bookclub. I think this trick is missed because we have already now assumed THE OTHERS are acting primitive or are not so primitive as they appeared in season 2.
03 Ticking Clock
---------------------
As Juliet chooses a CD we hear the tick-tock of a clock normally in the background. But during the bookclub and just a few moments before the earthquake (TIMEQUAKE) the clock seems to stop entirely. It definitely stops guys! The ticking clock is placed there for a very good reason, and I'm pretty sure this is a big clue by the producers to show that a time effect is involved.
04 Earthquake Effect
--------------------------
This is clearly supposed to coincide with the malfunction in the SWAN STATION and this is when the TIME RIFT expands and OCEANIC FLIGHT 815 enters the island's air space. The earthquake is because TIME HAS CHANGED after the earthquake (TIMEQUAKE) as the plane now enters INTO THE FUTURE and crashes. I've seen this kind of thing before in sci-fi, possibly Timecop or some other scifi movie/tv-series when a big change has happened IN THE PAST.
05 Sci fi mentioned
------------------------
During the bookclub, a hint is dropped during the discussion that a book they're discussing isn't literature: described as 'popcorn' (meaning more or less pure entertainment) without a metaphor. Also described as by the religious numbers hokum pokum and SCIENCE FICTION. This is a joke by the creators. The creators are creating serious drama AND using scifi. The scifi they're using is part of the metaphor for the show. They're clearly big fans of scifi and fans of great works of literature. (Hence why the title of the episode is called A TALE OF TWO CITIES, it being a metaphor for this episode).
NOTE: An offhand remark that BEN isn't there because the book they're reading isn't literature. It is possible that BEN isn't there because of a possible relationship problem between BEN and JULIET. This may be explored later in the series and be part of a love triangle with JACK. This is also possibly why JULIET chooses the song DOWNTOWN to cheer herself up.
06 Stephen King
--------------------
The book being discussed by the bookclub is most likely a Stephen King book. Stephen King is not only a writer of horror but also a writer of science fiction, such as THE RUNNING MAN, THE TOMMY KNOCKERS, etc. Stephen King also wrote THE STAND which is about a giant plague and the END OF THE WORLD (basically armageddon). I think the book they're discussing is THE STAND by Stephen King, and it happens to be JULIET's favourite book. She also 'reacts' after Ben's name is mentioned, suggesting that JULIET and BEN are indeen in a relationship. Interestingly, the person JULIET argues with is named 'ADAM' (whom she appears to dislike intensely.).
Stephen King also wrote a short story called THE LANGOLIERS about a plane that travels through a TIME WARP/TIME RIFT into the past and future. THE LANGOLIERS are terrifying creatures that eat the past once the present has gone. In the film version of this story they can be seen approach initially by tearing down trees in a forest, exactly like the monster in episode 1 of the first season. THE PAST is empty of substance and flavour while THE FUTURE is brimmed with flavour and health. People seem to travel through time only if they're asleep.
Some people have suggested that the book they're discussing is CARRIE. This is entirely possible, but I've heard that THE STAND is one of the books that has influenced the creators of the show. Clearly they're Stephen King fans and clearly his books are having an influence on their ideas (As is Charles Dickens.).
07 Free Will
---------------
Just as the very end of their discussion before the TIMEQUAKE, JULIET rants "Silly me for thinking so low as to select something that Ben wouldn't like. Here I am thinking that free-will still actually exists on ...". Clearly there is a big paradox between THE PAST and FREE-WILL. Perhaps Juliet thinks that in this time on the island they do have free-will. She doesn't finish because of the TIMEQUAKE but if she had, we may know exactly WHERE/WHEN they are.
08 Plane's Smoke Trail
----------------------------
After the TIMEQUAKE and plane's travel through the TIME RIFT to the island, the plane appears to have suffered a catastrophic engine failure. It leaves behind a trail which begins very suddenly from where the plane likely didn't exist 30 seconds previously. The TIMEQUAKE and the trails seem to coincide exactly where the trails begin. This clearly points to the fact that the plane suddenly appeared out of the blue just after the quake. The failed engine appears to completely detach from the aircraft.
09 Engine Falling
---------------------
In the film DONNIE DARKO a plane breaks up in the middle of the air, its engine detaches and falls into a house. The entire plane crash is part of a time loop.
10 Listen, Learn Don't Get Involved
--------------------------------------------
Ben tells GOODWIN and ETHAN to "Listen, learn, don't get involved." THE OTHERS don't want the survivors to know anything which could possibly effect THE PAST if they are sent back.
11 Blood Samples
----------------------
JACK, SAWYER, KATE all appear to have had blood samples taken. The same happened with MICHAEL and CLAIRE when they were captured. In the film PHILEDELPHIA EXPERIMENT 2 which also involved time travel, the main character could only travel through time successfully if his DNA was compatible.
12 Hydra is Abandoned
-----------------------------
The HYDRA STATION is clearly an abandoned zoological research station. It isn't underwater. Seawater appears to be pumped to and fro into where JACK is imprisoned. THE OTHERS are keeping them all there instead of OTHERVILLE (the tiny town in the intro) in order to keep their town secret. If they find out about the town then they may put its existence in danger if the LOSTIES eventually return to the PAST. SAWYER and KATE are also being held in the same abandoned HYDRA STATION (the HYDRA logo is clearly seen on a pipe near SAWYER and he is caught by JULIET who is interrogating JACK).
NOTE: Although JULIET says they're underwater, they're probably not since we saw her walking in the forest before she catches SAWYER when he escaped. It's probably a joke by the creators after everyone on the net suggested that a hatch was underwater. Unless of course the HYDRA STATION is connected by some kind of transport and if it is made up of 9 different station parts (The HYDRA is a mythological creature with nine heads.).
13 The others are part of the Dharma Initiative
---------------------------------------------------------
The food supplies (tomato ketchup on KATE's breakfast table, and the water bottle on JACK's tray) have DHARMA INITIATIVE labels on them. This links THE OTHERS directly with the DHARMA INITIATIVE. They may be part of the UTOPIAN SOCIETY EXPERIMENT. They must be aware of the SWAN STATION because they made contact with MICHAEL via the computer terminal. However they may not have known this during DESMOND and KELVIN's stay there. KELVIN describes them as THE HOSTILES as does DESMOND. This may explain why BEN does not consider the SWAN STATION important. The UTOPIAN SOCIETY EXPERIMENT was kept secret from all the other DHARMA INITIATIVE stations. An incident (possibly 1985) may have resulted from the abandonment of all but THE SWAN and UTOPIAN SOCIETY EXPERIMENT.
14 "Let it go Jack."
------------------------
JACK's father says this significantly in a flashback. It then repeats mysteriously on an intercom in JACK's cell. How? This is pretty unexplainable... but JACK is holding a phone which may be recording on his father's mobile voicemail. THE OTHERS may have access to computer terminals (the same ones they used to contact MICHEAL in the SWAN STATION) and connect either to a massive futuristic database in their time or via the TRANSMITTER back into the PAST. Since THE OTHERS are in the future, they can potentially have access to everything in the PAST unless certain access is restricted to them.
It is also possible that JACK may simply be Hallucinating his father's voice from the effects of the drugs given to him and dehydration.
15 Ben saves his skin
--------------------------
BEN closes the door without saving JULIET after JACK floods the room. He is either unheroic and a coward or the entire attempted escape of JACK was pre-planned. This was to get JACK to trust JULIET. JULIET knows about the button that shuts off the sea water and so I assume it was pre-planned. Perhaps the intercom was used to 'trigger' JACK's violent attempt to escape.
16 Fishy Biscuit
--------------------
KATE may have been threatened that SAWYER will be killed if she does not cooperate (They used WALT to control MICHEAL in a similar way to cooperate). This is why she looks like she's been ill-treated when we know she has not been. THE OTHERS are trying to con the con-man. They want SAWYER to believe THE OTHERS are primitive barbarians, but KATE and JACK now know different. KATE and JACK may be offered the chance to join THE OTHERS and their UTOPIAN SOCIETY EXPERIMENT just like BEN said when he was talking to LOCKE. The only downside of such a proposal is that neither JACK nor KATE could ever return to the PAST. They want SAWYER to return back with the LOSTIES. This may all tie-in with the themes and plot of the Dickens story A TALE OF TWO CITIES.
17 Everyone is Dead
-------------------------
If my theory is correct, if THE LOSTIES and THE OTHERS are all now IN THE FUTURE, then the consequences are that JACK's wife is very much dead and gone. Although the possibility is that THE LOSTIES may be able to return again to their time. JACK will have to 'Let it go' if he is to join THE OTHERS in their UTOPIAN SOCIETY EXPERIMENT. The metaphor is very obviously to LET GO OF THE PAST.
