Quite a lot actually, but not recent because I stopped making an effort to enter competitions. But prior to last year I would enter roughly 30 competitions a month (free draws). Over the last 5 years I have won:

32" LCD and DVD player
Tickets to We Will Rock You musical (West End) - turned out when we went they were at the front and worth £150 each!
30GB iPod Classic
N95-8GB
12 Bottles of Champagne
Various CD & DVDs
Various PS3/Wii/Xbox games
A Signed Teddy Sheringham football (worthless of course)

If I can I usually sell the things that are of value unless I really want the item.

Try going to www.loquax.com

They list all free to enter competitions. If you have some free time enter a few free draws, if you don't enter you can't win.

What have they got to gain by giving away free pruck?

I there no catch? :)

It tend to be advertising or sponsors. Say for example Virgin Atlantic are trying to drive business for a new route they are flying, one of the tools they use would be to generate a free to enter competition that increases visitors to the website.

By the time they announce a winner (mostly 3 months down the line) they have had enough bookings to justify the prize.

I mean you have to be careful sometimes to check what your signing up for, most free-to-enter entry forms have junk mail check boxes you have to look for. If you miss them you get bombarded with unwanted mail. But other than that, there no risk other than registering your details. I tend to stick to newspaper competitions or other reputable websites (Virgin, BA, etc). Loquax lists them all.
