What's the plaque made of?

its a biofilm, usually colorless, that develops naturally on the teeth. It is formed, as in any biofilm, by colonizing bacteria trying to attach itself to a smooth surface (of a tooth). The microorganisms that form the biofilm are mainly Streptococcus mutans and anaerobes, with the composition varying by location in the mouth. Examples of such anaerobes include fusobacterium and actinobacteria. The extracellular matrix contains proteins, long chain polysaccharides and lipids.

I was under the impression that Streptococcus was a genus of spherical Gram-positive bacteria belonging to the phylum Firmicutes and the lactic acid bacteria group. There is evidence that Cellular division occurs along a single axis in these bacteria, and thus they grow in chains or pairs, hence the name — from Greek streptos, meaning easily bent or twisted, like a chain (twisted chain).
