its a biofilm, usually colorless, that develops naturally on the teeth. It is formed, as in any biofilm, by colonizing bacteria trying to attach itself to a smooth surface (of a tooth). The microorganisms that form the biofilm are mainly Streptococcus mutans and anaerobes, with the composition varying by location in the mouth. Examples of such anaerobes include fusobacterium and actinobacteria. The extracellular matrix contains proteins, long chain polysaccharides and lipids.

didn't you know?

I was under the impression that Streptococcus was a genus of spherical Gram-positive bacteria belonging to the phylum Firmicutes and the lactic acid bacteria group. There is evidence that Cellular division occurs along a single axis in these bacteria, and thus they grow in chains or pairs, hence the name — from Greek streptos, meaning easily bent or twisted, like a chain (twisted chain).

Did you know....The first Crayola crayons came in a box of eight colors: black, blue, brown, green, orange, purple, red and yellow. By 1957, 40 new colors were introduced. Today there are more than 120 crayon colours, including Atomic Tangerine, Blizzard Blue, Mango Tango, Outrageous Orange, Laser Lemon, Screamin’ Green and Shocking Pink. Over 5 billion crayons are produced each year.
Incidentally the last seven mentioned have also played for Portsmouth under Harry Redknapp

Did you know .....Korfball was founded in 1903 in Holland by Amsterdam teacher Nico Broekhuijsen. It is one of few team sports that up to its highest level is played with mixed teams: a team consists of 4 men and 4 women! In defense, men guard men and women guard women. High speed, super agility and enormous endurance
