if any one remembers what is what like to have a good conker fight at school, they will be disheartened that the olde conker tree faces extinction  :(

article here

i loved conkers, and everytime you won you would take the opponents wins under you conker. i started years ago with a one win conker, and in the end made it up to 254 wins. alas it lost to an up and coming conker of only 34 wins.

never mind, conkers were great. hope they can save the tree for future generations of kids  :)

There's a lot of things dieing off from when we were kids, and the shocking thing is, that it was relatively not that long ago considering how abundant these things were that we remember, and how close they are now to actually being gone for good. Frogs, newts, toads, and all sorts of amphibious wildlife are quickly dieing off. The last time I actually seen a frog in the wild where I am was over 10 years ago, and now conkers are dieing? I wonder what tomorrow's youth will be doing instead of catching frogs and having conker fights in the school yard.

Still loads round by us. Shame though if true - i had a belter when i was a lad, soaked for ages in vinegar it was - hard as nails. The tw@t rapped me on the knucklesa during many a bout...but it didn't lose once. Til it flew off its tether and went down the grid  :(

I did that too, Nan. I just forgot all about it. When you first knocked a conker off a tree with a stick that you'd been eying, that was half the fun. Ripping it open to see if you had a champion conker inside was another bit of the fun and all part of the surprise like Christmas. Such simple things, and it's sad that as you get older things like that wane. I'd tend to find that often if you got a massive, shiny one, it didn't mean they were any good. Most times those ones were soft in the middle and got smashed to bits  within a few cracks.

I'm not having it that Judge had a conker that had 254 wins. I think it must have been a pebble :D .

After reading those rules, it's quite possible that Judge had a 254-er. I don't remember those rules though. If you beat six other conkers, it was a six-er, simple as. Those rules say that you add the cumulative scores up. Bollox.
