I think it comes from India.....many rap artists in the US and UK, can often be heard referring to themselves as Swami's, dont know why...but there you go!

A Swami is in fact a bit more than just a respected elder , it's a Hindu word often used as a title for Religious Teachers ,Guru's and Yogi's . :nod
