There are plenty of big enough grounds in the country now, Old Trafford and Highbury seem natural choices to me, until ours is built and possibly even St James park, i know the location is out of the way but so is London for alot of the northern clubs.

I don't think Highbury would be a good choice.

Keep Wembley for finals and England games. We could always host a semi, got to be better than having it at villa park and old toilet every year

yeah your totally spot on mate, this as got more to do with the f.a trying to get back some of the cash its spent on the new stadium than anything to do with the good of the game.
as you say it totally devalues the competition that was the genesis of competative footy.
the football league was only set up as something for clubs to do whilst the f.a cup came around again. thats the truth.
without that trophy they`d be no barcelona, real madrid, boca juniors or river plate.
it was that trophy and the magic of it that fired the passion for the game into the sailors and businessmen who travelled the world and spread the gospel of footy.
i also agree with the posters that mentioned the merits of the old tradition `semi` grounds like villa park, maine road, highfield road and old trafford.
some of the greatest games in the history of football were played in those grounds with the prize of wembley in the air, and for me one quick example is when kenny dalglish scored an equaliser with 6 seconds left against arsenal at villa park in 1980 during that mammoth series of semi finals.
that was one of my best moments supporting liverpool.
