Our stock was high worldwide in 2005, and we went for Crouch, Pepe, Sissoko and Zenden. We also apparently tried for Figo, Simao, Giannikopoulos, Luisao, Solano and Milito. That was after winning the Champions League! Our stock is nowhere near as high right now. We're back in the Champions League after half a decade, in the league with the most competition for the top four places. We don't exactly pay extraordinarily high wages if you're one of the very top draw either.

I don't know what some fans expect. Who are the players that are looking to come? It's the likes of Markovic, Can, Moreno if we can agree a fee. The world class prospects who look at us and see they'd rather be playing every week for Liverpool, than on the bench elsewhere. High stock or not, if you're not a Liverpool fan, there's no obvious attraction to separate us from whole host of clubs who would all be in for the very top players, and those players know they're going to be starting and a star wherever they go.

Think we can go around and around on this one St Mike and eventually disappear up our own a'rseholes !

I'm not suggesting we should "realistically" expect us to be signing any of footballs "elite" but would have hoped we'd have set our sights higher than some of the players we've been linked with or so far signed (e.g Lambert, nice fella but a 32 year old striker !)

For me bottom the line is contrary to your jaundiced view i.e.

after Brendan's declaration that he wanted to sign "quality players that were ready for the first team" I don't believe it was unreasonable for Liverpool fans to expect us to splash some hard cash on at least one or two top signing that would strengthen the first eleven in preparation for another tilt at the title in the upcoming season.

btw I do believe that Lalana, Can and Markovic (if signed) will prove to be good signings , it's therefore not all doom and gloom from where I sit but we still need one or two players a class above those I've just mentioned.

I seen we were linked with Reus this morning with the price slashed to 2/1 favourites to sign him.  Within the last hour reports are coming out saying we got no idea where they've come from and are far wide of the mark.

Not good enough  simply not good enough. Can't believe people are happy to be linked with such dross.  We were awesome last season, a complete attacking machine, a wonder to watch and brilliant to be a part of. Within touching distance of the Premier League and in the Champions league.  We are MASSIVE powerhouse of a club, I refuse to accept big names wouldn't come to us.

We need to up our game in the transfer market!

You make it seem like we sell our best players for profit when we actually sell them because they want to leave. I do not think any one of us wanted to profit from Suarez and know we will be weaker without him but if he is determined to leave then the club must move on. It will happen alot when your best players are from different countries and view us as a stepping stone.

Think that's fair comment, with the exception of Reina the quality players that have been sold were sold because it's what they (not we) wanted.

Suarez,Torres,Masherano,Alonso,Arbeloa,Owen etc all wanted out 

Even Reina told us he would leave as he knew Barca were going to come calling (they didn't because Valdes changed his mind)

That's what I mean! We need to start going for this type of player! It needs to be concrete not transfer rumours.  The club gets criticised when we are linked with Ben Davies and Bony, not when Reus rumours are false. It shows lack of intent IMO.

Arsenal tried for years to win without buying established players, only to realise now you've got to buy class to progress!

I hope I'm wrong don't get me wrong, but our track record of buying sh!t doesn't seem to be ending this window.

You can't really blame people who are calling the club unambitious if the said club is "baffled" to be linked with a quality player.

Fair comment, I'd forgotten that with the gradual exodus over a few seasons of the Spanish contingent Pepe was also finally looking to return to Spain, although when the prospect of Barca fell through I think he was ready to re-commit to us but by then the trust between him and the management was broken.

I'll tell you what happened. We won the champions league that season and Owen won nothing. With our so called "superstar" departing for Madrid, we were still able to attract Fernando Morientes (at the time was a superstar). That CL win in 2005 was contributed by virtually everyone in the team. No one individual makes up the entire team. We were top in our first 3 games and beat United without the help of Suarez.

We will still be able to attract world class players, if not immediately, then as a result of our season performances and any major honours that are won each year.

Yet our attack was not the best and we were nicking games 1-0 so you give  and you take. We have never been so exciting to watch as we were last year. If we can just address the amount of goals scored against we will be fine, even without Suarez because we will still play attacking football and make alot of chances.

We won't make half the chances without Suarez, he's the most clinical player I've ever seen. I.E. When you expect him to pull of a pass or finish, he obliges. A lot of great players often f*ck up a ball to put someone in or a bit of link up play, Luis didn't. Sturridge doesn't hold the ball up well enough and his linkn up play is very average, if people are expecting us to be anything like the same attacking force we seen last season then thats extremely naive. If you remember at the start of the season, we struggled badly to create chances until Suarez regained his place.

You also seem to conveniently forget we have a defence which concedes nearly two a game. Skrtel, Johnson and Mignolet will never be part of a solid defence. All of them are complete flops and bog standard players.

Hyypia, Carragher and Finnan were far and away better than what we have now. Our midfield, while more than decent going forward aren't exactly the type to control a game and stop another teams midfield playing. We create a lot of chances, but the midfield is by no means dominant, yes we have creativety in their so even when not dominating they will still create, however our forward line is massively weakened and thats what made us what we were last season.

We need a keeper, a right back, a centre half, a winger and now a centre forward. Anything less and we'll struggle to make the top 4.

We didn't exactly spend any big money on those players though. Carragher and Gerrard were locals and from the academy while Alonso, although a good player, wasn't exactly a superstar before we bought him. Hyypia was also bought for peanuts. Don't get me wrong mate, I'm very much in agreement with you that we need a quality player to replace Suarez, but kazza's and mramo's point was that we've never actually bought any sound names yet we've still managed to keep ourselves near the top and even win a title or two.
