It doesn't appear we have many mechanics on here, more jokers but here is the update.

I still haven't taken it to the mechanic, he's too far away, though I will be driving to Cairns Sat'day with dodgy fluid.

I checked the canister properly, well the fluid in it. It's supposed to be cherry red. Mine was black! Similar to coke. Also, I noticed a small weep under the ps pump - yes it's leaking, boo hoo.

Read conflicting stories on the net, that say many ps fluids will go black if not changed every **********km's. Others say o'rings and hoses deteriorate and cause the blackening of the fluid, contaminating it.

Spoke to another bloke tonight do the pub, the Toyota ps pump is gear driven from the engine. He reckons that IF the ps fluid gets to low in the system, the pump will suck in engine oil, thus making it go dark brown/black. In which case he reckons new ps pump is needed and a full flush.

FS, cars are a pain in the fecking hole.

dead right, laza. that would have absolutely guaranteed a no nonsense response and an almost instantaneous solution to the problem.
