New Boss - The Candidate Thread

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

So just when I was  warming to Martinez , bloody typical   :D

While I know there are some class candidates in Europe, I still prefer someone who has already been in cauldron of Premier league (excluding Porto Prince because he is a *****) which is why I rather have Rafa back. A couple of people have thrown Paul Lambert's name up now and I must admit its a good shout when compared to some of other names including Martinez which have been bandied about.

Oh well excitement of chase continues but I expect it will be anti climatic as well

As for Whelan well, I give him some  credit as owner who trying to do to everything to keep his manager at his club without alienating him by using the media.

As Martinez is holding a press conference Tuesday at Wigan then its pretty
much certain  he will be staying there and is not coming to Liverpool.

If he had been appointed manager at Anfield the press conference would
surely be there with Fenway alongside their man.

Apparently, he's also recommended FSG to sign Isaac Cuenca... Barca youth striker to reinforce our striking department... Never heard about him though...

I'm just rather fed up of the merry-go-round media speculation party that comes with football. I just want the new manager to come in and sort things out. I don't care if it's Lambert, Rogers, De Boer, Klopp or Benitez. I just hope they come in and start putting the right results on the board. Hopefully this saga will end soon and we'll have our new Director of football and our new manager and then we can push on, bring some fresh faces in for the new season ahead.

I just hope whoever becomes our next manager is given the full support of the fan base, irrespective of whether or not he's the manager everyone wants.

I'm afraid I don't agree. Why would he be holding a press conference at Wigan to announce he's staying? Surely just a public statement to that effect would be enough if he had turned down Liverpool. As another blogger has suggested he may not even be at the press conference which suggests that this is over one way or another.

At the very least I reckon he's decided to move on from Wigan and will either announce he's looking for a new challenge or that he's joining Liverpool and will be meeting FSG for further meetings to finalise things. I very much doubt whether we'll now get the big name we wanted this looks over sorry but that's how I see it.

I don't know why many fans want Rafa back. Yes Rafa did a good job but have you ever wonder knowing Rafa's character, whether he will fit in well with FSG new revamped system? Rafa can never work with a DoF, a post that FSG wants. I know Rafa is well capable of getting us back into top 4 but he won't blend in well with the new system and could end up with the same fate at his last managerial post in Italy.

As for appointing Martinez, this FSG most probably wants to know what it is like at the other end of fighting to  finish 4th from bottom as oppose to 4th from top. And who else is better and more experienced than Martinez to come in to do that job diligently well season after season. Yup, we're in very safe hands under Martinez to fight against relegation.

If Van Gaal said he wanted the job and mean it, they should give the guy a chance. I am sure appointing V.Gaal will be a breath of fresh air. He has the deep experience at managing at the top level so why not give him a chance as manager instead of DoF?

most fans want rafa because he is not an unknown quantity, he`s been here before and did very well under tough circumstances.
everyone else represents a gamble of some degree, martinez`s CV is very average (steve bruce did better at wigan), van gaal has never managed in this country, is reportedly extremely hard to get on with and has a habit of falling out with star players, rodgers is similar to martinez in the sense he has an average CV and klopp looks impressive but again he has never managed in this country.
after three successive campaigns finishing out of the top 4 a lot of fans are concerned about appointing a manager who is a perennial relegation battler, they think it sends out a signal that the club is lowering expectations and is in managed decline, appointing martinez could be a masterstroke but i know if chelsea or arsenal finished 6th, 7th and 8th and then appointed a wigan manager i know what i`d be thinking and it wouldnt be that they are moving heaven and earth to get back into the big time.
i think by the end of next week things will be a lot clearer one way or the other.

Managers need to get their break from somewhere, just look at Shankly. He came to us from Huddersfield where his record was 49 wins and 47 defeats in 129 matches as manager of Huddersfield. What about Paisley? Liverpool was his only club, he never managed anyone before us. Fagan only managed a small club called Nelson in the early 50's before he became our manager. All of these managers never had amazing records when they came here, yet these men each brought success to our club. Why can't Martinez do the same? I actually think he's done a decent enough job at Wigan with very little resources. Wigan must spent the least out of all 20 clubs in the League. Martinez has had to scrimp and save in the transfer market and he's signed some decent players and when they perform Wigan actually play very good football.

People who say that Martinez will drag us down to relegation are being unfair, if Martinez gets the backing he wants and if Martinez can get a team to gel together then I believe he can become a very good manager for us and I believe we can enjoy success under his leadership. I think he'd work well with our young players, he may even instill some much needed confidence to the likes of Carroll, Downing and Henderson.

I actually like the prospects of a dynamic young manager coming in. We've tried the elder route with Hodgson and Dalglish and it hasn't worked out as well as hoped, so why not go for a fresh approach?

I've got nothing against a young dynamic manager with something to prove, but does he have to be from a club battling relegation every year?

Shanks came to us when we were in the Old Second division - but of a different prospect to now

Both Bob and Joe were promoted from within - the same as Kenny was.

Martinez has been able to spend some money in the market - as I said earlier he broke Wigans transfer record on a guy who player 11 games in total. Martinez's win percentage is around 29% ? That is very poor.

As for this press conference - where has that been announced.

Dave Whelan is loving the attention and if Martinez is staying he will take great pleasure
in annoucing it to the world via a press conference.

He will be like the cat that got the cream if his Roberto turns down Liverpool to stay at
Wigan make no mistake.
